Regulus shrugged. "We went to Egypt," he drawled, tapping his fingertips on the table. "That was interesting, anyway. Otherwise, it was pretty boring. I did learn several new chess gambits, but somehow I doubt you're interested in that." Apparently alone out of all of them, he felt absolutely no desire to sneer. "How is your dear brother, anyway, Carrow?"

Most people had already taken their seats by the time Barty arrived at the Slytherin table. He walked along the length, his pale blue eyes flickering from one housemate to the next, his hands clenched tightly in his sleeves. The moment he saw Severus Snape's familiar back, though, all the tension drained out of the tiny Slytherin, and he walked with a new purpose in his step. There were already people on both sides of Snape, but Barty didn't care. He was small, and he was determined. Without so much as an 'Excuse me,' he put his hands between Snape and the fourth year next to him (Regulus Black, son of Walburga and Orion Black, one brother, Sirius Black...) and spread his arms, trying to make room so he could sit next to his Snape.

Severus felt a small hand on his shoulder, icy cold and covered in fabric, and for one irrational moment he thought it was death. A glance to the side proved him wrong, illuminating the owner of the hand. Barty Crouch. The weird little kid with the photographic memory who seemed to have adopted him as his mother duck while in school.

"Regulus, I think you'd better move," Severus drawled, remembering just how bizarrely determined the Crouch kid could be.

Regulus looked up steadily at Crouch, his grey eyes narrowed in a Black glare that would have put any one of his family to shame. His lip curled up into a disdainful sneer, and, reaching up, he peeled Barty's hand off his shoulder as one might a piece of dead meat that was just beginning to stink.

"You know," he said slowly, distaste positively dripping from his voice, "where I come from, it's generally considered common courtesy to ask when you want someone to move. I'm a stickler for manners, Crouch. You should know that by now. Ask me, and maybe I'll move."

Until then, he was staying put. True, Crouch might be stubborn, but Regulus was hardly a pushover himself - and he certainly had the advantage of height and weight over that runt of a second-year, even slim as he was. Besides, every Slytherin instinct in him screamed against letting anyone gain supremacy over him so quickly.

"I'm waiting, Crouch. If you really want to sit next to Snape so much, then ask."

Barty stared unblinkingly at Regulus, his head cocked to the side a little. Inwardly, he was mentally cataloguing the way his eyes narrowed in the glare, how his voice changed as he spoke with such distaste. He was also recalling what he knew about this older boy, and what were the best buttons to push to get his way.

"Yes," he finally said. "And also where you come from, people have a habit of ignoring manners, common courtesy, and general decency." His eyes momentarily slid in the direction of Gryffindor table, where Sirius was laughing loudly with his friends, before returning to Regulus'. "Forgive me for not realizing that you were raised differently." He replaced his hand, giving Regulus a little push. Barty had no chance of actually getting the other Slytherin to move by force, but it was for the effect. "This is my seat."

"Oh, is it? Do excuse me, I must have failed to see where your name is written on it." Regulus made a show of looking at the seat under him, then raised one haughty eyebrow. "What a surprise. There's nothing there. So, before this degenerates into insults, I would just like to point out that I was sitting here before you arrived, and that you have precisely no claim to it. Just so that we know where we stand, you know?"

He frowned slightly, following Barty's eye. "Crouch, if you choose to take a blood traitor as an indication of anything at all, then I suppose you can expect misconceptions. But I would have thought you would be something of an expert on the art of discourtesy."

"You're being pompous," Severus informed the air at general. He turned his head slightly to look at the space on his other side. Which was... small. Since he happened to be at the very end of the table in order to facilitate a quick getaway. There would be no help from that quarter.

"Would you prefer that Barty sit in your lap?" Severus asked, raising an eyebrow as he turned again to look at Regulus. "It might be easier."

In the short term. Until it sparked terrible rumours.

"I sit next to Severus," Barty told Regulus, narrowing his eyes. There was a lot to narrow. "No matter where he sits." Which meant that Regulus was in his spot, regardless of the lack of a name. He looked over at Severus, and then back to Regulus. "Sitting in your lap is acceptable." A little grin was tugging at the corners of his tiny mouth, a mischievous little grin.

"Sit where you like," Regulus said, rolling his eyes. "But rest assured that, if you do, you can expect to spend the rest of the year hexed so that you'll never sit anywhere without screaming in pain. It's really not so complicated, Crouch. All you have to do is ask me nicely. Come on, it's not so difficult. Well, not for normal people."

"I suppose that means you find it hard to ask nicely too," Severus said, more for the sake of just having something to say than anything else.
