"Really? I wouldn't have noticed that," Regulus said dryly, still smirking. For himself, he considered that he was exceptionally cultured. That wasn't arrogance (at least, it mostly wasn't arrogance); that was fact. After all, the Black library was noted for its extensive collection. Curiosity drove him to his next question, despite his better judgement. "Out of interest, Snape, what do you mean by gossip? I'm afraid that what your invisible friend tells you doesn't count." |

"There's always gossip surrounding the Blacks," Severus replied, quite honestly. "This time your branch dodged most of the talk," he admitted, shrugging thin shoulders. "There is, of course, the usual speculation that your brother dear is actually the product of a dallyance with some un-named ministry man. But we all know that's just an effort to excuse his... eccentricity." The last word was said in a way that implied that the word Severus had wanted to say was a lot less polite. |

"Well, anyone who hasn't accepted that my darling brother is a blood traitor and a disgrace by now clearly hasn't kept very closely up to date," Regulus replied calmly, shrugging. "Even my parents are beginning to come to terms with the fact that their firstborn has no sense of nobility and no survival instinct. And you're quite right, of course. There is always gossip around the Blacks, mostly because every pureblood wizard in Britain is, to whatever degree, a Black. Don't you agree, Snape?" This was all said perfectly congeneally, but something - maybe only a certain emphasis, a variation of inflection - echoed back to his earlier remark about Snape's heritage. |

"Funny," Severus replied, eyes flicking breifly to the Gryffindor table, an unpleasant look on his face. "I didn't realise you were openly aknowledging the Weasleys." He paused a beat, smiled, then continued. "Or the generations of incest. Good for you, being so open. Personally I like to keep the odd entanglements of my family tree as quiet as possible. I fear I don't have the confidence that comes from marrying cousins." |

"Evidently. You also don't have much skill in geneology, apparently. You know, it really isn't necessary to always marry one's cousins in order to keep the bloodline pure. Well, it is, but, with the scale of the Black family, they're mostly no closer cousins than the ones Muggles marry." He sneered. Thanks to his genetics, he had a very good sneer. |

"Which of your not so close cousins are you hoping to marry?" Severus asked. He would smile sweetly, but the mere thought of doing so conjured images of cracked mirrors. He decided it was better to just stick with blandness. "Or are you planning on being a rebel?" |

"I'm planning on doing whatever is best for the family line," Regulus replied neutrally, resting his chin in his hand and scrutinising the first-years. Several of them he recognised; most of them he didn't. "It's all right if you don't understand that, Snape. I wouldn't expect you to. It is, after all, a course of action which requires at least a modicum of nobility." |

"What's nobility?" Severus drawled, frankly agreeing with Regulus' point. Severus didn't have a shred of nobility to him. He was just oddly talented dirt under the boot-heels of pureblood society. Which meant he could marry whoever he damnwell wanted to... though the idea of marriage was a pipe dream. Who would have him? He dared not think about who he wanted to have him. It was too delicate, too soon, and he was too scared. What if, when he finally got the courage to tell her how he felt, she rejected him? |

"And therein lies your problem," Regulus muttered, the sneer tugging at his top lip again. With an effort, he pushed it away, leaving his face blank and expressionless. Damn, he hated talking to Severus. Of all the places the older boy could have chosen to sit, he thought morosely, still examining the nervous-looking first-years in the doorway, why on earth did he have to choose the seat next to Regulus? He guessed he knew the answer. Well, he was damned if he'd rise to it. |

The problem was seated right beside him, and well ingrained into Slytherin's expectations. It was practically the only thing Severus didn't particularly like about his house... that the constant needling was often based upon who you were related to. Severus tapped his fingers against the table, frowning slightly. What a great start to the school year, to be stuck at this god-damned boring feast... without yet even being at the 'feast' part. |
