Regulus Black looked... smug. Very, very smug. Given, that was rather his default expression, and not very surprising, but it was true, anyway.

And he was feeling smug, actually. This had a lot to do with the fact that, firstly, he had found a chess partner, secondly, he had persuaded said chess partner (a rather superior sixth-year girl - a Slytherin, of course) to lay money on the game and, thirdly, his pockets were now rather heavier as a direct result of the first two reasons.

Merlin's beard, he'd missed this!

Combing slender fingers through his short black hair, he tucked the newly-reshrunk chess set back into the inside pocket of his robes, straightened himself out, and strode over to the Slytherin table, head high. The girl from the train - whose name he absolutely could not remember - was staring at him with a mixture of admiration and intense dislike. The same emotions were mirrored on the faces of most of the Slytherins, in fact.

Heaving a heavy sigh - but only mentally - Regulus strode past the slightly accusatory glares, being very careful not to look either at them, or at the Gryffindor table. That was where Sirius sat.

Sirius, who was the cause of a good chunk of the glares the younger Black received (the rest were mainly from people he had trounced at chess recently) as he strode around the end of the table, towards the nearest free seat.

Sirius, the blood traitor.

Sirius, his brother.

Brilliant. Bloody brilliant. These things would be so much easier if he was the eldest.

Sitting down, Regulus glanced up and down the Slytherin table, nodding to himself. Still, he thought, it could be worse. It could be a whole lot worse.

It was sort of about to get worse.

The Slytherin table always managed to seem a little darker than the others, something of a feat in a school where the uniform included black robes. Still, it was homey in its own way. If you liked green and silver, anyway. Severus was something of an expert at appearing at the table as if he'd been there the entire time, since before anyone else. The truth was that he just timed his appearance perfectly - he waited (if possible) for significant people on the other tables to be engrossed in conversation or in watching other people, and quickly stole a seat where he could at his own house table.

Today, that seat just so happened to be beside the infamous Regulus Black. A boy who wasn't quite able to redeem himself of Sirius' bad name.

Severus sighed. And sneered. "Weathering beginning of term glares already," he commented. Now that they were both seated together it was hard to tell who exactly was the object of various dirty looks.

"You are indeed," Regulus agreed. Although he tensed - barely perceptably, but tensed nonetheless - he relaxed almost instantly, not turning to look at the older boy.

It was only Severus Snape, after all. He was fairly confident he could handle it.

When he had finished his lesiurely assessment of the Slytherins, he allowed himself to scan the other three tables. His eye passed over the Marauders as quickly as it did over anyone else, not pausing, then he turned his attention to the new first-years, looking thoughtful.

"It's a cross to bear," Severus drawled, not about to let Regulus get the better of him. Not like so many others (the 'glaring masses'?). "I hear things are rather tense in the house of Black. Nothing to do with you, is it? That little habit you have of cheating innocent punters with purile puzzles."

Actually, he'd heard nothing of the sort. But there was always something going on in the pureblood households, so it was a fair gamble to make.

"Purile?" Regulus raised an eyebrow, the sardonic expression he adopted almost managing to cover the way his heart was thudding in his chest. He didn't know, couldn't know, what went on in the Black household. He was bluffing, had to be.

Bastard, he thought, but aloud, all he said, smoothly, was, "You really think chess is a purile pastime, Snape? I think that the last five hundred generations of wizards would beg to differ. But then," he added sweetly, "you wouldn't know about the last five hundred generations of wizards, would you?"

Oh, yes. Regulus Black had been doing some digging of his own.

"Past is past," Severus countered, as smoothly as he was able with his upper lip curling a little. So he wasn't a pureblood... that meant nothing when talking about history, did it? There were plenty of purebloods who had no idea what had happened when. Possibly thanks to how boring the study of history happened to be. "Now is now. And now, yours is the family with the fodder for gossip, not mine."

Unless you counted, well... everything about Severus' family.

"That's your mistake," Regulus answered steadily. "Past is never just past. That's why we learn history, in case you hadn't noticed. Knowledge is the fount at which Fate drinks." Something akin to a smirk was beginning to twitch at one side of his mouth. "And if you think the past is over and done with, it's no wonder you're terrible at chess."

"I don't play chess." He didn't play any games at all. Sidestepping verbal traps and taunts was about as much excitement as he could take without trying to learn some other game as well. Severus shook his head, simply waiting for the dry-as-dust beginning of year speech to end. "I do, however, appreciate the wisdom that history provides us with. I just don't believe that all of it is relevant."

Potions knowledge came from the past, for example. So did the many spells and charms they learnt here. But there was a vast difference between knowledge that was relevant and all the red herrings that would never be used outside academia. God. He should really get out of this conversation before it turned to philosophy.

"Don't tell me you're becoming a philosopher?"

"No, just a historian," Regulus replied blithely. The smirk, which he had managed to force back into expressionlessness, was back in full force now, and he couldn't really be bothered to hold it back. The corners of his lips turned up into a Cupid's bow. "Don't tell me you've never heard that quote before. I didn't have you pegged as an idiot."

Much, the tone implied, less than subtly, but what he had said was, in all honesty, the truth. He didn't think the Snape boy was an idiot - just uncultured, ill-mannered, and easily-led.

"I'm a man of many surprises," Severus drawled, figuring he could take the hint at an insult if it would only stop Regulus from going on about history and chess.

Severus was uncultured. Most of the time he didn't care. Every so often he'd be trapped by a quote (like now) and wish that he'd had a better education before Hogwarts. Or maybe a decent library within walking distance of his house. That would have been just as useful.
