"Dragonpox?" Lily asked, thoughtfully. "Is that sort of like the chickenpox? Or does it have all sorts of strange and disgusting magic-y side effects?" Lily began to despair that she could never possibly know all of these strangely named wizard diseases, which would put her career path in quite a bit of danger. |

"Chicken pox is sort of like the dragon pox's weak, diluted cousin," Severus explained. "Dragon pox is much worse. Usually nobody dies from it, but it's very contagious." Which meant quarantine, and all sorts of other things. Severus couldn't help but imagine James and all of his friends in hospital beds at St. Mungos, unable to leave their ward in case they infected anyone else. |

"Oh," Lily said. "Poor wizard children. I had the chicken pox when I was six. Itched like the devil. I wouldn't wish that on anyone." Unsure of what to say, she fell into what she hoped was a companionable silence. The carriage lurched forward, and Lily thought back to a book she had read over the summer. About wizarding transportation, it's integration with Muggle technology, etc. "Hey, Sev," she asked quietly. "Can you see the Thestrals?" |

Severus gained a look that was a little reminiscent of a deer caught in someone's headlights. It was there just for a moment, fading into a look that was only uncomfortable. "Thestrals," he repeated, glancing out the carriage window. "You want to know if I've seen anyone die." What a nice, charming conversation to have on the way to school. If it were anyone but Lily asking, he wouldn't have replied at all. |

"Well, you don't have to tell me about it," she said, following his gaze out the window. "I didn't know they were even supposed to be invisible, not until this summer," she said, looking at the creature pulling the carriage next to them. "I thought they were commonplace, and that's why no one talked about them. Like, really ugly horses." |

"You could call them really ugly horses," Severus said eventually. That was kind of what they looked like... vaguely. "Anyone who can't see them is lucky, Lily." |

"Lucky?" Lily said, mulling over the word. "I suppose. Death isn't so bad, though, not all the time. It makes us more alive." She looked back at her friend. "I'd love to have my Grandparents back. But I'd hardly call myself unlucky for their deaths. They were sick. And oh, dear Merlin, I've made us both depressed. Let's cheer up! I'm sure there will be plenty of fine dining at this feast we have to look forward too!" |

"Fine dining," Severus agreed. "But what about the company?" It would all depend on what time he actually managed to get to the great hall and what time those people he considered his 'friends' got to the hall. The company would be fine so long as he didn't have to sit next to someone who really didn't like him. "I wish they'd scrap that rule about only eating with your own house." |

"So do I, Sev. It's really not good for school unity, especially with these attacks." She shook her head, "Good Lord, I can't avoid these awful topics! Plus, there's always prats like James and Sirius, ready to start a fight at a moment's notice." She sighed. "I do hope they have pumpkin juice. I adore pumpkin juice." |

"They always have pumpkin juice," Severus pointed out, steering the topic away from the terror twins of Gryffindor and the attacks on muggles and those who stood up for them. "Eclairs, pies... The day Hogwarts stops serving pumpkin juice is the day the world no longer has pumpkins." |
