((It's about time I joined this game. Sorry about the huge delays.)) Leaving the Slytherins behind was like stepping out of a hot, dark room. They were a room that was cosy when you first entered - the trouble was that the longer you stayed there the stuffier the room got until the heat seemed cloying and the presence of too many bodies made the room stuffy. Every so often you just needed a fresh breath of air. A little breathing room. Gloom and doom was a regular passtime. For Severus Snape, the light and sunshine contained within a genuine smile was more special than that. An empty carriage was like a beacon. Severus claimed it as his own, trusting that the pottering sheep would stay out, not wanting to get stuck with him all the way to the castle. He hadn't seen Lily on the train. It was sort of tradition not to meet there. Instead he saved her a seat, watching the crowd for a flash of her white skin and red hair. |

The train ride to Hogwarts had passed, uneventful; she'd managed to snag a compartment with Marlene and a few of her other friends before all the good ones had been taken. The Prefects had been asked to meet briefly after the train took off from the station, and she'd had to patrol for a little bit before returning back to her friends. She'd also learned that Remus was, thankfully, the other Gryffindor Prefect. The pair got along surprisingly well, given his posse, and she supposed she ought to give him a bit of credit, for putting up with Potter and Black nearly all hours of the day. As was routine, she didn’t look for Severus on the train, and vice versa. Lily didn’t much care for his choice of friends, and they returned the favor by not much caring for here; therefore, it was easier just to avoid them altogether, to steer clear of any explosive confrontations. Once the train had let them off at Hogwarts, she’d been able to slip away from her friends unnoticed as they made their way toward the carriages. Thankfully, it didn’t take Lily very long to find the one that Severus happened to be in; his face was to the window, his dark eyes seeming to search the crowd. The redhead weaved her way around a clump of Hufflepuffs, through a crowd of giggling third years, and stepped up into the waiting carriage, closing the door carefully behind her. “Hey, Sev,” she greeted him lightly, smiling as she took a seat across from him. |

"Good train ride, then?" she asked, skipping the required "how was your summer?" She was pretty sure how his summer was, given the numerous mornings spent in her kitchen, consuming ridiculous Muggle cereals. (She had quite enjoyed introducing Sev to the garish and flamboyant characters decorating the boxes. And then there were the afternoons spent at the playground, vacating whenever families with children came along, so as not to be creepy hooligan teenagers. |

((Sorry, Delilah just didn't interest me, so I neglected to post here again...)) Severus shrugged, actually smiling a little at Lily. "It was acceptable at least," he replied. "Not that Slytherin gossip really interests me. How was your ride? I saw you get ambushed by no less than three different groups of people." Lily's other friends - which wasn't really an ambush - a prefect or two, and, just the same as him, a representative from Slughorn. Ambush was quite the right word for that man, and Severus wasn't all that interested in what Slughorn could provide. He seemed to care more for the comely students anyway, and rarely paid any direct compliments to Severus on his work. |

((feel free to inform me if I post something hideously uninteresting, and I will change it right away!)) "Slytherin gossip? Is that different from normal gossip?" Lily asked, raising an eyebrow. "And acceptable sounds about right for me, too," she said laughing. "And also, Sev, let's not exaggerate. It was hardly an ambush. Well, not mostly. By Jove, Slughorn is pushy." She paused, thoughtfully. "And the prefect's meeting was quite intimidating. I don't know if I can handle patrolling on top of all these O.W.L.S." Lily said this lightly enough that any of her friends, even those in her inner circle, would have dismissed it as small talk. They would have tossed small compliment her way and carried on talking about boys and such. But Lily and Sev didn't do small talk. |

The O.W.Ls were something to be a bit worried about, even if you were a smart student. Severus was worried about his. If you didn't get enough it could throw off your entire career plan. Even if you didn't have a plan, the number of O.W.Ls you managed to scrape up for yourself would effect your options. Severus, who wanted a rather nastily competitive job, was mainly concerned with his potions grades... But others would be handy too. He gave Lily a slightly sympatheitc look. "You know, if you ever need help..." A study partner, or just someone to rant at. |

"Yeah, Sev," she said softly, "I know." She smiled at him, before twisting her expression into a silly face, then relaxing it. "So, back to this Slytherin gossip. Anything you care to share? I totally have some shallow, uninteresting Gryffindor gossip if you'd be up for a trade." |

Aaand that was where things got a little complicated. Severus hesitated, mentally running through everything he could remember being said on the train. What was safe to talk about with Lily? "Aside from the usual talk about who is not dating who," Severus said finally, "there was some talk about those acts of terrorism..." The ones suspected to have been perpetrated by followers of a certain Lord Voldemort. |

Lily's face blanked momentarily at the reference, but she quickly regained her composure. "Ahh, I see your conversations were a bit more heavy than ours. None of that stuff in our compartment, of course. Lots of talk about snogging, boys, that nonsense. And that fit pizza boy. The one you said resembled teenage male McGonagall?" She giggled at the memory. "So my Pottercount this year is at zero sitings. Good start, eh?" |

"Perhaps he developed dragonpox," Severus suggested, managing to keep from sounding too hopeful. Wouldn't that be nice? A year without James Potter trying to flirt with Lily (and get Severus into trouble). Maybe it would even be fatal! Still, no use dreaming, Potter was probably lurking somewhere about. And his little friends too. He pointedly ignored the comment about the pizza boy. It had taken a great deal of willpower not to look jealous when Lily had seemed mildly interested in the other boy. |
