Another year, another start. Marlene looked at the scarlet train, coughing as some of the steam from the engine flew into her throat. Shakespeare, her barn owl, hooted loudly as she came to a rather abrupt stop in the middle of the platform, but she paid him no mind. Instead, she squinted through the steam, trying to see if her best friend, Lily Evans was also around.

Lily Evans' summer had been far from enjoyable. Petunia was, as always, set on being awful whenever Lily was home; in front of her parents, they had a forced, unspoken truce, which usually was just refraining from contact altogether. The point was to outwardly look civil; when it wasn't absolutely nesscesary, Petunia simply avoided her younger sister like the plague, as if her freakishness would rub off on her if Lily so much as shared air with her. In a way, Lily supposed she should be grateful for this behavior; it meant less unpleasant encounters. However, she almost prefered arguements over the stony, stiff silence that hung between them for the entirety of three months. A part of Lily hated her, for acting this way only because of what Lily was; but a much larger part, larger than it should be, anyway, cared. Tuney was still her sister. As much as she tended to be at Lily's throat whenever she so much as blinked the wrong way, and despite the fact that the two sisters were almost polar opposites, she still cared. That wasn't going to change anytime soon; being family ran deeper than nonsense prejudices.

Needless to say, Petunia had refused to escort Lily to the platform to see her off, as she'd done so the past four years, so it was only her parents that came along. Whereas her sister's goodbye had been a stiff nod of recognition, only because Mrs. Evans had been watching, her parents' goodbyes had been far more elaborate. Her mother had even gotten a little teary, while her father had simply joked that Lily was growing up too fast. After assuring them countless times that she'd write as much as she could, that, yes, she'd remembered to pack everything, and after a few tight hugs, she'd finally been able to go on her way to board the scarlet train. Toting her luggage behind her, Rosie's cage perched carefully on top, her eyes scanned the crowd of students for a familiar face.

It didn't take long to spot someone she knew; a brunette not too far away seemed to be scouring the platform as well, her owl protesting loud enough to be heard a distance away. An easy grin spread across the redhead's face, and she moved over in her friend's direction, her things trailing carefully behind her. Marlene's back was to Lily; she tapped her lightly on the shoulder, clearly happy to see her. "Looking for someone?" Lily asked jokingly, resisting the urge to throw her arms around Marlene; they'd exchanged letters over the summer, but Lily hadn't seen Marlene in person for months. Letters weren't the same.

Marlene squinted her eyes a little bit, still searching the platform in front of her, as she felt a small tap on her shoulder; and jumped. She turned to the owner of the voice, recognizing it instinctively before she saw the face. “Lily!” She dropped the bag on her arm, and warmly embraced her friend, flashing her a bright smile. “I was looking for you, of course! How are you? How was your summer?” She hugged her again. “Oh, it’s so nice to see you!”

Lily let her luggage stand on its own and returned the embrace, grinning all the while. Marlene could probably be considered one of her closest friends, and she'd been part of the reason Lily was anxious to get back to school. Due to the distance between the two friends, they didn't often see each other during the summer months, and any contact at all was strictly via owl. "I'm good. Great, actually. Summer's been...long." She laughed, figuring that Marlene would know what she meant. "How're you? How was your summer? You look fantastic. Tan." It was no secret that Lily was very fair-skinned, and even during the summer, she didn't tan very easily. "You're making me look like a regular albino." She laughed again, hugging her once more before pulling away to look at her.

"Oh, shut your mouth, Lils. As if you didn't know that your classic English looks are much preferred to my mixed Mutt looks." Marlene grinned. "At least one," she put extra emphasis on the last word, "comes to mind." She wiggled her eyebrows. "But do I really look tan? I don't look that different to me..." She furrowed her eyebrows, gazing at her arms.

Lily rolled her eyes at the obvious Potter reference; surprisingly enough, he hadn't appeared out of nowhere, as he usually did, to interrogate her about her summer. She was grateful for that much, anyway. "That's not funny," she informed Marlene, although still grinning. "I haven't seen him, yet. Don't jinx me." She shifted her feet a little, reaching to grab ahold of her luggage once more; Rosie was napping peacefully in her cage, oblivious to the surronding chaos of students. "I think you do, anyway. Did you go on a holiday?" Her summer had been the farthest from eventful as you could get.

Alice ambled through the wall, with a rucksack slung over one shoulder and a heavy wheely case trundling along behind her, with the travel cage containing her beloved cat Rue balanced precariously on top. The definitely female teenager in her knee-length summer dress and trainers was almost unrecognisable as the skinny kid who'd left Hogwarts at the end of last term. She had the usual freckles sprawled across her round, friendly face, and the usual thick brown hair hanging loose down her neck, but she'd developed curves and height over the summer.

She still acted like a kid though, as was evidenced by the fact that on spotting Lily and Marlene standing on the platform, she dropped her bags, charged over at full pelt and tackled both of them into an immense, grinning hug. "Lil! Marlene! HI!"

“Well, I think that it’s funny.” Marlene laughed. “Oh, but Potter has that cute friend, Peter.” She winked, and giggled. “Just kidding!” She shook her head. “Nope, I pretty much stayed at home all summer. Had some fun with a local boy, though.” Marlene’s eyes brightened. "Wait, why? Did you go somewhere?” All of a sudden, Marlene was almost thrown over by the force of someone’s arms enfolding around her. “Woah, there.” She steadied herself, realizing who it was. “Alice!” She hugged the girl tightly. “How are you? How was your summer?” She grinned.

"Fantastic, thanks!" Alice grinned, her Scottish accent, as usual, much stronger than it would be after a few weeks at Hogwarts. "It's been so warm, hasn't it? My face has just recovered from being a giant freckle with bits of skin in between!" She released her friends, laughing, and headed over a few steps away to retrieve her luggage.

"So," she said upon her return, "did you two have a good summer too? Go anywhere nice? I went to the Edinburgh Festival, it was awesome. But Dad had to go to work, so it was just me and Mum."

“Bollocks.” Came the quiet mutter from the clenched teeth of a fifteen year old girl. Hopping onto one leg, slender fingers grasped her right foot, pulling it above her knee in a sort of flamingo position. She rubbed her exposed big toe, wincing slightly, then let the worn, leather, sandal covered foot drop back to the ground. That curb had snuck up on her, she swore it. The dip to let trolleys into the station had started at least 2 inches to the left, or so it had seemed a moment ago. So, with slight shame, Florence bent down to retrieve the things that had toppled from her trunk upon colliding with the curb. Which, incidentally, had resulted in her stubbing her big toe on the wheel of the trolley. If only there was a cure for stubbed appendages, the thought. If she was remembered for anything, she decided then and there, it would be the invention of a charm to ward of stubbed toes.

Straightening up once more, and smoothing the front of a pale yellow dress, she turned her trunk back over with effort, and replaced the miscellaneous items that had scattered on the pavement; a book or two on healing charms, spare parchment, a couple pairs of socks, a photo of her family. If they could only see her now, she could imagine what her father would have to say, watching as his only daughter steered her trolley right into the curb. Maybe she did need the eye exam he was pushing for. Whether she did or not, the young girl maneuvered her trolley onto the sidewalk to many lingering stares and continued on her journey, sweeping pale hair from her face and smiling as if nothing had happened. She steered her trolley towards platforms 9 and 10 and took the now familiar route through the barricade that separated them.

Generous blue eyes scanned the crowded landing for any sign of her friends, flaming red hair accompanied by two heads of brown hair caught her attention, and she wheeled her trolley in that direction, muttering apologies along the way, she really wasn’t any good at driving this thing. Finally emerging through the crowd next to her friends Lily, Alice and Marlene, her face erupted into a full smile, showing straight white teeth. She hadn’t seen her friends all summer, true they had corresponded by owl, but it wasn’t the same. Moving around her trolley she did a sort of jig that had a lot of arm movements, shoulder rolling and ended in the moonwalk, placing her dead center in the middle of the girls. “Ladies, where have you been all summer?!” she squealed, almost hopping up and down on the spot, throwing her arms out for a hug.
