"You take care of yourself, won't you, Jamie?" Nicolas Potter ruffled his son's hair affectionately, smiling.

"Dad!" James laughed, fending off Nicolas' hand. "Of course I will. I always do."

"That's debatable," Elizabeth said dryly, giving James a tight, motherly hug. "I don't want to hear that you've been expelled, all right, James? And keep an eye on Sirius for us. I've heard rumours..."

"And write every week, and do well in lessons, and all those other things you've said every September for the last five years?" James suggested, picking up his suitcase. "Mum. I'm a big boy now. I'll be fine. And I don't know why you bother asking me to write every week, because you know you'll be lucky to get a letter a month."

"No, I don't know why, either." She smiled, managing to kiss him on the cheek despite his valiant efforts to avoid it, and handed him his owl's cage. The bird inside it, a tawny owl, hooted sleepily, opening one eye, then, apparently deciding it wasn't worth his time, went back to sleep.

"Thanks, Dorian," James commented, bringing the owl up to eye level and raising one eyebrow. "I appreciate the enthusiasm." He glanced over at the train, gently chuffing from the opposite side of the station, and then looked up at the clock. "Plenty of time. I'll wait for the others."

Preparing for Hogwarts was never easy in Number 12 Grimmauld Place. Not for Sirius, at least. Sirius would try to pack his trunk, but Kreacher would try to rearrange it (‘pack more efficiently,’ he’d say) and remove anything even remotely interesting, so Sirius would have to redo it, and the elf and the wizard would have shouting matches until Sirius commanded Kreacher to help Regulus with his packing in his very best booming Black-Heir voice. Then that would bring his mother to lecture him about mistreating the house elves, and really, couldn’t he show a little bit of appreciation for everything he had been given in life instead of chucking it all out with the rubbish? And Sirius would snap at Walburga, and Walburga would snap back, and Regulus would try to get in questions about where this or that was, until Orion stormed up the stairs and put a Silencing Spell on Sirius. That would take some time, as Sirius had his wand and would shield himself and counterspell, but with Walburga’s backup, Orion would inevitably be successful and Walburga would continue to lecture Sirius as he tried to ignore her while packing in stony silence.

By the next morning, the Silencing Spell had worn off and Sirius was twitchy, so anxious to escape the ancestral home. First, though, he had to tussle with his parents over his broom, which had been confiscated at the beginning of the summer. By the time he got it back, Regulus had been waiting patiently, all packed and ready. And then Walburga informed Sirius that his new robes were on his bed and he was to wear those to the station. The Blacks had to look their best out in public, after all, and those ratty deep-gold colored ones that Sirius was currently sporting just would not do.

That provoked another spat. The new robes were a stunning shade of dark blue-violet, the latest style as far as cut went, and, Sirius was sure, they would fit him perfectly. The robes were blue enough that when he stood in the direct sun, they would bring out the bluish sheen to his hair. He would look fantastic in them.

But they were purple. And Sirius loathed purple. He found vomit more attractive than purple, because you could use vomit in interesting ways to wreak havoc. Purple was just… disgusting. He would not wear them. He would not even touch them. He left the purple robes on his bed and went down with his trunk and his owl, staring defiantly at his mother in his gold robes.

This was about the point where spectators (namely Regulus) needed to seek cover. Walburga could shriek insults in a pitch that no human should be able to reach, and she could cast magic at that pitch as well. Sirius countered as best he could, throwing some curses of his own around, before his father, larger and stronger than the fifteen-year-old boy, came up behind him and grabbed him forcefully by the arms. Walburga was able to disarm him, and Sirius was half-dragged up to his bedroom. When he came down again, looking sullen and resentful, his cheek rather red from a slap that was magically healed before it could bruise, he was dressed in the purple robes. Orion shoved him toward his trunk, and, after Sirius had a good hold on his things, took Sirius’ arm and Disapparated. Walburga was left to take Regulus.

The Blacks never walked into Kings Cross Station. That would require them to dress as muggles. No, they settled on Side-Along Apparition, one parent to one son.

That was how Sirius Black turned up on Platform 9 ¾, with a loud crack of displaced air. He immediately yanked his arm out of his father’s grasp and turned to his just-Apparated mother, holding his hand out expectantly. She slapped his wand into his palm with a warning look and sniffed disapprovingly as her eldest son stalked off to find a Marauder, any Marauder, any Gryffindor, really. James usually showed up early.

Sirius was having a hard time concealing his anger and bitterness. His bad mood clearly showed on his face as he pushed his way through the crowd of students. Castor hooted angrily from his cage, but Sirius ignored the owl in favor of scanning for a head of messy hair. There. There he was. Sirius left his trunk and owl and broke into a run, trying to keep as quiet as the Marauder Padfoot could. James’ back was turned; could Sirius grab his friend in a bear hug before he was spotted?

Remus' parents had gone through their typical ritual on the morning that Remus was to go off to Hogwarts. They'd start off trying to remain cool, but he'd catch them giving him puppy-dog eyes over breakfast. Then they'd list off - multiple times - all the things he had to remember to pack, and that he had to remember to do (despite the fact that Remus, being organised, had been mostly packed for days now). Then they'd get tearful.

As usual he'd had to stop them worrying, recite back to them all the safety precautions he would go through, and then eventually persuade them to let him go to Platform 9 3/4 by himself: after all, it was his fifth year, and he should be able to board a train without being hassled by his parents. Because of the fact that he was an only child, and that they'd had to pay him extra attention due to his 'problem', they found it harder to let go than they might have done if he had been normal.

So as it was, he walked through the brick wall onto the platform by himself, trailing his suitcases behind him. The platform was busy as usual, filled with students and their families saying goodbye. Some looked upset, and some looked excited - it was easy to tell the First Years apart from the rest because they were the most nervous-looking. He offered a few of them reassuring smiles so as not to scare them further - after all, this year he was a prefect, and he had responsibilities. In addition, there was a noticeable spring in his step. Things were looking up, even if only by a little.

Now Remus scanned the crowd for someone familiar. Not seeing anyone, he frowned - and then caught sight of movement in the crowds, someone running at quite a fast pace. He should have known really - it was Sirius, and he seemed to be running at great speed towards James. Shaking his head and laughing, Remus began to walk (at a much slower pace) over to them, predicting that by the time he got there Sirius would be done with his stealth attack and he could greet them in a more civilised manner.

"Sirius!" Elizabeth exclaimed, waving to him as he sprinted past her. "We were just talking about you!"

"Nice try, Pads," James remarked, turning around just in time to be almost bowled over by his friend. "Never, ever try on sneak up on me while Mum's around. She's got eyes like an eagle, haven't you, Mum?"

Elizabeth laughed. In his cage, Dorian woke up sharply at Sirius' dramatic entrance, letting out a squawk of protest.

"Shut up, Dorian," James told him, putting the cage down, and grinned broadly at Sirius. "Nice robes, Pads."

"Rawwww!" Sirius gave up on stealth and went for the hug anyway, his momentum allowing him to get James' feet off the ground. His friend was definitely too big to swing around, but he could get his breath squeezed out of him. "Merlin's beard, but I missed you Potters." He blew James' mum a kiss and elbowed James in the side. "Shove it, Jamie, or I won't tell you about my summer."

Wheezing dramatically, James hugged Sirius back, just as tightly. "You already did, remember? I have the meticulously-noted history of the last six weeks piled in the corner of my room, in the form of increasingly desperate letters. You're going to drive your family into debt on the cost of ink alone. On that basis, go ahead."

Laughing, he shoved Sirius away. "Merlin, Siri, I missed you! Did you get your broom back?"

Remus reached the two of them and smiled. "Hey, guys. I can see you're both energetic as usual." Laughing, he suddenly realised he had news to break to them. "And, erm, you'd better not be getting into too much trouble this year... you have a prefect as a friend now," he added jokingly. He pointed to the badge, fully expecting them to cause more trouble than usual just to go against it. Still, he wouldn't mind too much - as long as he was fair to everyone else, he could probably get away with not being as strict on the Marauders.

"Ah," Sirius said, holding up a finger to James, "but I did not go into detail about the Egyptian booby traps I learned about! You should have seen some of those tombs, Jamie! Those ancient wizards would put us to shame!" He grinned and gestured back to his trunk, where Casper was still fussing. "Yeah, broom's in my case. I think it's cursed, though. I want to strip it down and rebuild it before I trust it..."

When Remus showed up, Sirius grabbed him in a hug as well. The friendliest face he'd seen all summer had been his brother's, and Sirius was too cuddly to not hug his friends hello. "Moony! You survived without us! But what!?" He pulled back, staring at the badge in mock shock and horror. "A prefect!? In our midst? No... no... where did we go wrong? Jamie, our little boy has grown up corrupted!"

"Uncorrupted, I think you'll find, Siri," James corrected him, folding his arms and raising one eyebrow at Remus. Shaking his head in mock-despair, he clicked his tongue. "Where did we go wrong, Remus? We failed to ruin your life chances. Tragic! Oh, woe!"

Behind him, his father laughed, giving Remus a bright smile. "Maybe he'll manage to keep you in check, Jamie," he said lightly, ruffling his son's hair again. "But I doubt it. Well, we can see where we're not wanted, can't we, Liz? See you at Christmas!"

Remus hadn't noticed James' parents, and he smiled back at them. "Hi, Mr and Mrs Potter."

Turning back to look at his friends, who predictably were 'horrified', he grinned in amusement. "Sorry to disappoint. I'm afraid I'll now have to go about life filled with regret about how I could have committed such a crime... I don't think I'm ever going to recover."
