"I wonder if these are duds..." James muttered, flicking his card down onto Peter's. "I'm sure something interesting should have happened by now. Oh, well." He was messing up his hair again, apparently unaware that he was even doing it, and, where it had at one point been something not a million miles from neat, now it had reverted to its usual mess. "So," he said after a moment, grinning, "who's looking forwards to Hogwarts?" |

Remus was surprised by Sirius' question. He wouldn't have expected anyone to know about that: however, he'd been told the story often by his parents. "Yeah, actually," he admitted. Pondering upon Sirius' own name for a moment, he suddenly looked as if he'd been hit by a brainwave. "Oh! You're named after a star, right? The brightest star in the night sky, I think." He couldn't resist adding that fact the end. "Alright. So. James, Pete, and Sirius." He pointed at them in turn, committing it to his memory. He threw a card down. Still nothing. He was beginning to suspect that James was right about the cards. |

"And my middle name's the second brightest," Sirius said, flipping out his card without a care as to whether or not it blew up. "I have a sneaking suspicion that my parents wanted me to be a bright star. But yeah, Hogwarts is gonna be awesome. I've got some cousins there now, but I'm gonna beat them in everything. Except being girly. They can win that." |

"I'm really nervous, actually," Peter admitted, chewing the bare lolly stick. "I haven't been to boarding school before. But still, um, it's going to be fun." He glanced around the compartment and for the first time, he felt the glimmerings of hope that maybe it would be. He dropped his card onto the stack, not really looking, and yelped as the resulting blast nearly took his eyebrows off. By the door, Specs woke up with a loud hoot of surprise. |

James grinned. "Well, I guess that proves they're good cards, anyway. You okay, mate?" Spitting his own lolly stick into his hand, he shoved it into the depths of his jeans pockets. "You're out, Pete," he said, a little redundantly, and tossed down a card. |

Remus almost jumped when the card exploded. Almost jumped - he managed to stop himself in time, and saved himself potential embarrassment from jumping at a small nearby explosion. "I'm pretty excited too," Remus said simply, although with a certain amount of enthusiasm. He wasn't going to go into the circumstances surrounding his excitement. He'd been thrilled to be allowed in at all. "Anyone know anything about the Sorting there? My parents didn't tell me too much." He wasn't expecting another explosion so soon after the previous one, but when he threw down his card he really did jump. Thankfully he avoided any kind of minor injury from the explosion, and after the shock wore off he laughed and gestured for the game to continue. |

Sirius snickered, turning to face James properly. "You and me now, for the win! Sorting's a piece of cake. You go up and sit on a stool, and they put a smelly old hat on your head. It reads your mind and yells out where you're supposed to be. Sometimes it takes longers than others." He shrugged. "My whole family have been in Slytherin. Never takes the hat long to place a Black." |

"My mum said it's really embarrassing, though. Because you have to go up in front of everybody and sit there and you know everyone's staring." Peter shuddered slightly, not exactly relishing the thought. "And what if you don't have any of the qualities you need? What if, um, you're not brave enough for Gryffindor or smart enough for Ravenclaw or proud enough for Slytherin or even nice enough for Hufflepuff? What if the Hat just looks into you and..." He bit his lip. The Sorting was another thing that had been preying on his mind. Distractedly, he opened Specs' cage door and stroked the tawny owl's soft feathers, comforting himself.

"Don't be silly, Pete. What're the chances of that happening, huh?" Grinning, James tossed another card in the vague direction of the heap, reached over, and patted the blonde boy on the arm. "Tell you what'll happen, right... you'll go up there, sit down on that stool, get an old hat stuck on your head, and the shouts of triumph from the Gryffindor table won't have died away by the time I go up after you. Then I'll come and sit next to you, and throw Exploding Snap cards at you all through the feast. All right? It has to be Gryffindor, though, 'cause there's no way I'm settling for anything else. I suppose Ravenclaw would be okay, but it's hard work. Hufflepuff's a load of duffers, everyone knows that. And if I get Sorted into Slytherin, I'm turning and walking all the way back to Shropshire." He made a face, laughing. "Your turn, Black." |

"It reads your mind?" Well, now Remus was worried. Going pale, he had a horrible vision of the sorting hat looking into his brain, seeing his secret and shouting it out to the whole of the school. He'd never be allowed to stay then: he'd be arrested, or chased with flaming torches, or made to live in a cave for the rest of his life. No, that would not be good. "I just thought it would be a test of some kind..." Because at least that would be less potentially traumatic. |
