"But Mum, I don't want to go! Can't I go to the High like all my friends?" Peter Pettigrew eyed the gently chuffing red train with nervous eyes, holding onto his battered suitcase with one hand until his chubby knuckles were white, his other arm tightly around his mother's ample waist. He didn't want to go to Harrogate High either, didn't even have any real friends, but now the train was here, a clear, unignorable reminder that he was going to have to go to a scary new place where he would still feel lonely and stupid all day, but he wouldn't be able to go home to his comfortable home and his loving mother at the end of the day. He was only eleven. He wasn't ready yet.

The short, plump woman with him sighed and stroked his hair as he clung to her, near to tears. "Sweetheart, we've been through this. You can't go to the High, they won't teach you how to use your powers. You want to use your powers, don't you? Like I do? Like your dad did?" Mentioning Peter's dad was a sure-fire way to get him to behave. They'd been a very close-knit family, and although it had been three years since Andrew Pettigrew had died, they both felt a strong urge to make him proud.

Peter's lip wobbled, but he let go reluctantly. "B-but..."

"But me no buts," she scolded gently, scruffing her son's short blond hair and pushing him towards the train. "It won't be too bad. I'll write every weekend, don't worry, and it'll be the holidays before you know it." She smiled slightly sadly as he took a few hesitant steps away, then picked up the owl cage and held it out to him. "Don't forget Specs! Good luck, honeybun! I love you!"

"Love you too, Mum," Peter muttered, taking the cage from her and stepping onto the train with a final wave. The holidays before you know it? As if. Peter Pettigrew knew school, and every day was an age when you were a lonely, stupid fat boy with no friends. And now it would last twice as long, day and night...he chewed his lip nervously as he looked up and down the train before finally starting forwards to find a compartment. He hoped there'd be an empty one where he could hide out, just him, his suitcase and his owl.

This was what it was all building up to. This moment, when Sirius C. Black stepped on to the Hogwarts Express and officially became a wizard. Of course, he was just an underage wizard, but still, ‘wizard’ was officially in his title now, and no longer just ‘scion of the House of Black.’ Sirius could just see the stern countenances of his parents over the crowd of excited students, and he knew little Reggie was at their feet, probably holding tight to his mother’s robes. He gave them a wave and a grin before hopping on to the train and heading off on his grand adventure.

Of course, his grand adventure first required him to scope out the best possible compartment on this magical train. Sirius scampered through the corridor, holding tight to his wand. He was already dressed in robes of a deep forest green, but he had his black Hogwarts uniform in his trunk. He couldn’t wait to put them on.

There was another door to the train, and there were currently no students in the way, so Sirius peered out, wondering if any of his classmates from Madam Cleo’s would be here. He did see someone he recognized, but she wasn’t a student. She was an older woman, someone’s mother. From the looks of her kid, he was a first year, definitely too shrimpy to even be a small second year. Sirius frowned, hanging out of the train to get a good look at him. He knew that kid. How did he know that kid? He knew that kid’s mother, at least…

Sirius ducked out of the way as the kid climbed on board the train, hiding a snigger in his shoulder. Honeybuns? His mother's nickname for him was amusing, but unhelpful.

The blond boy was heading down the corridor, away from Sirius, so the Black boy followed him, grey eyes narrowed thoughtfully as he racked his brains. Not a member of his class. Who, then?

We begin with the following equipment... James Potter dipped his quill thoughtfully into the ink pot next to him, turning back to the open notebook, and pulled over a large carpet bag from the seat next to him, pulling it open and peering inside.

"Balloons," he muttered, pushing his glasses up his nose, as he turned back to the book, the quill scratching across the clean white pages. "I should have brought balloons."

He'd been here since the train had first pulled up at the station - loving and caring as they were, his parents weren't about to leave even the smallest possibility of him missing it, and even though he didn't really want to go, his excitement had overruled everything else - and, to pass the time, he had decided to start his little project. It was called the List, as the title page read quite clearly, and he intended to fill every one of those pages with mischief, preferably both successful and amusing.

Glancing back out of the window, he spotted his parents, two elderly figures near the platform wall, and waved brightly. They grinned, simultaneously, and waved back.

He'd been looking forwards to this day for as long as he could remember. Getting on the train, travelling all the way to Hogwarts... he'd be in Gryffindor, of course, and on the Quidditch team, and he'd make lots of friends, and (if he tried hard enough) even more enemies. Now it came down to it, though, there was a gnawing fear in the pit of his stomach. What if it wasn't like that at all?

Running an inkstained hand through his dark hair, he blinked owlishly and turned back to his writing.

Dungbombs (seventy-two at last count)...

Remus' parents were beginning to create a scene, and he was more than slightly embarrassed. Of course he would miss them too, but he was pleased to be starting at Hogwarts. He'd even allowed himself to be a little excited. First, though, he would need to reassure his parents that everything was going to be okay. He'd been finding more and more these days that they were the ones in need of reassurance rather than him. Understandable, really, considering all they'd been through.

"Mum, Dad. I'm going to be fine. Really. I'll write to you every day if you want. And I promise I'll listen to what Dumbledore says. And I've got my calender, I know which days to look out for," he began, in a matter-of-fact voice uncommon on someone of his age. But really, he was having to behave as the parent here. This was unnatural.

His dad looked like he might be about to say something, a slightly pleading look on his face, before his mother jumped in and said, "Okay, okay. Gawain, we're going to have to let him go now. But Remus, you know it's going to be tough? I just want to know that you're going to be okay."

Yes, it was going to be tough. But, for once, he was determined. He had been given a chance here, and he was going to make the most of it. "I know." And Remus glanced over at the train, suddenly afraid it would leave without him. "Goodbye!" he yelled, running for one of the doors. His parents waved for as long as they could see him until he disappeared into the train, and then walked off sorrowfully.

Looking around with wide, worried eyes, Peter hurried past each compartment which he heard laughter or conversation from, too embarrassed and afraid to slide open a door and check if there were any seats. There was that boy behind him too, the one with the super-cool long hair and confident attitude, the kind of boy who hunted useless kids like Peter. He knew that if he stopped and opened the door to a compartment full of laughing, chattering older students, even if they were kind and welcoming, he would stutter and blush and fix himself in the dark-haired boy's mind as a total loser. Better to avoid attention.

But roaming the corridors looked stupid too. The other kids would think he was an idiot, when there were all those compartments. He'd look so stupid. So nearly at the end of the carriage, Peter stopped suddenly outside a silent compartment, hand hovering near the door, cage and suitcase in his spare hand, determined to just pop his head in and see if there were any spare seats.

His nerve failed him at the last. He stood dithering, chewing his lip until the blood rushed to it, staring at the dark wood. For goodness' sake, Peter, what's the worst that can happen?. But he couldn't. He just couldn't! He glanced at the taller boy behind him. Perhaps he could ask him to check for him? But even as he though that, he knew it was no good. His voice shrivelled away at the very thought.

Sirius stopped when the blond boy stopped, still looking at him curiously. The thought that staring was rude didn't even enter his mind. He was a Black. Hell, he was the Black, the heir to the whole family, every branch of it, the first born son of his generation, the doubly-shining star. If the world didn't revolve around him, nobody had bothered to inform him.

"Hi," Sirius said when the other boy looked his way. That face... where had he seen that face? And why was he thinking of cherries? "You going in here?" He reached around the smaller kid to pull the door open.

As the door slid open, James hastily flicked his notebook closed, careful not to smudge the ink, and tossed it into the carpet bag. Shutting the bag with a sharp click, he stood up, shoving it into the luggage rack along with his suitcase, and collapsed back onto his seat again, feet up.

The first rule of the List, he had decided, was that the List was his. If anyone saw it, it would be because he wanted them to. He certainly didn't want any potential victims knowing that he was using them as subjects for his research.

Yawning dramatically, he mussed his hair with one hand, looking over at the door as it slid open. "Most people," he drawled, "knock. Come in, do, oh uninitiated ones."

"Oh, um, yes," Peter said rather redundantly, feeling the blush spread up his neck to the roots of his pale hair as he stepped into the compartment. "Thank you," he added a moment later, realising he should.

He waited for the boy from the corridor to put his suitcase away, then put his own up in the luggage compartment and sat down in the corner, by the door, Specs' cage on his lap like a shield, hiding him between his knees and his chin. Specs was a fairly substantial owl, after all.

"Sorry," Sirius said, not sounding sorry in the slightest. "If you wanted privacy, you should have locked the door." He swung his trunk up onto the luggage rack and kicked the other boy's feet off the other seat by the window. He flounced down with a grin and looked over at the blond boy some more. "I'm sorry," he finally said. "But did you ever give me a lollipop? It was cherry..."

"Oi!" James kicked the black-haired boy in the leg, putting his feet back up, this time in the other boy's lap. "Wanker. I was here first."

An easy grin spreading over his face, he raised a languid hand in the vague direction of the blonde boy. "Hi. You seem much more polite. I'm James Potter."
