Ok, now that the episode is airing on the east coast of the U.S I'll say overall I thought the first episode of season 8 is a bit disappointing. It is yet another knownsub episode. Loved the scene where Morgan and Garcia return from England. Loved that Morgan tried to give Reid a fist bump and Reid shakes his fist in return. Garcia is whiney and unprofessional as usual but I didn't mind it so much in this episode. I hope she doesn't continue to be so though. Loved that Morgan calls her out on it with his "unnecessary roughness" remark. I'm so far undecided on the Alex Blake character. JT did seem to do alright but I will just have to wait and see. She seemed to be the focus of the all the main characters but I understand that as it is her first episode. I'm still very wary of her linguistics abilities as it did seem to take away some focus on Reid but I'm still in the wait and see mode with regards to her character. I did figure out before Blake and Reid did that they need to look at bee farms or honey production. I must say though that while I think JT is a very pretty woman I was not so impressed with her hair and makeup in this episode. Shallow I know but it did distract me. The shot of the ambulance driver impaled with the tree branch more than freaked me out. A long time ago when I was in my mid teens my older brother's childhood friend was killed in a motorcycle accident when he lost control of his bike and was impaled on a tree branch. I know in the ep it was just make up and props but it stilled freaked me out. I'm not sure as I could not see all that well the final scene with the season long unsub developing pics of the team but it does look that Alex was the focus and that Strauss' photo was included as well. If you haven't seen it yet, don't read further for spoilers. I actually was pleased that the team was more in the focus this time instead of all the attention on the unsub(or knownsub). I'm glad that we have more of the team figuring things out and interacting with how to deal with the newbie. I must say that it is getting too cliche that the initial encounters must be sooooo awkward and tedious. Remember how Rossi initially rubbed everyone the wrong way with his notepad and dismissive attitude toward Reid. I guess it's to show an arc of how the newbie will grow into a loving relationship with the team. But it just rubs me the wrong way to have Alex so rigid and unapproachable. It bugged me worse that Garcia had to be written so flighty and guarded toward her. Really? I think she's more professional than that. Speaking of professional, so many times the team contaminated the crime scene by touching evidence without gloves? It got wrapped up too quickly and conveniently at the end but at least, we get to watch the team do its stuff. On the swallow side, Reid's hair is back to so that gives the episode an A+ in my book. So I'm having high hopes that this is a good season. BTW 6-0 suture would never hold up in a struggling mouth. That suture looked like size 1 or 2 suture. Otherwise the makeup looked convincing. |

After speaking to some people who worked in the industry (one of whom is a director and teaches at a university about film/tv making) I have learned that the AND part is actually the most coveted spot so that gives Thomas top billing. I believe the "with" equates what is called second billing. So order of importance actually goes Thomas #1, Jeanne#2, Joe#3, and then the others. (I could be mixing up Joe and Jeanne's order, so I will need to check again). But Thomas clearly has top billing. I could have sworn someone told me that Matthew was in the credits before Shemar now. By the way, if you are worried about spoilers, there are spoiler tags. LOL. I don't mind it being spoiled. I actually missed all but about the last 2 minutes of the episode because I fell asleep and either didn't hear my alarm clock or the stupid thing didn't go off. So instead of waking a few minutes before 8 and turning on my TV I slept until 8:58pm and then woke up just in time to see Strauss saying something to Blake and then Garcia coming in and asking to start over. Which would have been fine but then she kept babbling (which I guess sort of makes sense but why is she so damned annoying?) Did something happen to Blake in the episode? She seemed like something had happened to her and she was upset at the end. I didn't buy Garcia's thing about not handling change well. She's gone through a lot of change in the BAU. Several team members were killed (off screen and it happened chronologically before the pilot episode). She did not seem to have a problem with Elle when she was new and she had to have been replacing someone that Garcia knew. She didn't seem to have a problem with Prentiss when she replaced Elle (although it seemed like Elle never really bonded with Garcia and Prentiss endeared herself to JJ and Garcia rather quickly). She didn't seem to have a problem with Rossi replacing Gideon (of course, Gideon was an ass to Garcia-- and pretty much the whole team-- and Rossi had been a member of the BAU before). She also didn't seem to have a problem with Seaver although it was clear she was upset about JJ leaving. So why now, after having gone through so much change before, would she suddenly be such a bitch about a new person on the team? (I suppose one could say that she liked Prentiss more than the others and was more upset about Prentiss being gone than having a new member). But it doesn't quite sit right with me. I've heard that Blake sort of stepped on Reid's toes in terms of spouting facts and saying things about linguistics that Reid would have known and said. I also heard that she dissed Morgan (but some people are disputing that). A friend of mine who interprets for deaf people and is teaching American Sign Language said that the cochlear implant stuff in the episode was inaccurate. I'm very apprehensive of the next episode because its written by my absolute least favorite writer. And I just learned that she will be writing the first episode that Matthew will direct this season (episode 10). Not sure who is writing his second episode (episode 20). Thomas is directing episode 15. That means Thomas will have to be light in episodes 14, 15, and 16. Matthew will have to be light in episodes 9, 10, 11, 19, 20, 21. |

suceress, I'm not sure how to use spoiler tags. With regards to Blake looking upset, she tried to talk the unsub down but he ended up blowing his brains out right in front of her. Hotch told her that she was probably the first person to ever talk nicely to him. While I agree that Garcia didn't have a problem with change in the early years there is precedent in the latter years of her dislike for change. If I remember correctly she did admit to Reid that she did a background check on Seaver in her first episode, wary of the person who was out in the field with her babies. Also she mentioned not liking change to Morgan, I think, in the season 6 finale when they were talking about budget cuts. I saw the episode "P911" this morning on A&E and I really do miss the early season Garcia. I hope the cochlear implant stuff was inaccurate as it was about a botched experiment that was never tested before being used on humans. While I don't think Blake stepped on Reid's toes I do wish a couple of her lines went to Reid. They did have one scene, where Rossi said tongue in cheek that they should lecture together, that I liked but the rest of their scenes were more one sided, Blake doing most of the talking and Reid would only have a line. I hope that is just because it is JT's first episode and it is an introduction to the character. I am completely undecided on the dissing of Morgan. I'll try to give you a heads up suceress as I'll see episode 2 tomorrow (tuesday) but I'm not sure that I will be of any help as I for the most part do like Janine's episodes, except for the boxing one. I am a bit wary though as well as the one thing that I don't like about her writing is her episodes are too unsub focused. |
