I guess I'm in the minority here. I was disappointed with this episode. It was visually interesting and appealing, but I wasn't sure the girl was right for the part. I know she was supposed to be somewhat "off" but she was off in a way that didn't work for me. There were so many plotholes in this one, and so many problems with it.. We had very little team and got almost no personality. I do think Reid was talking a little too fast as well. I haven't re-watched since I couldn't get too excited about it. Even the music this time around didn't work for me. I like the song "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" but I didn't really feel it worked for the mood. I think "Twilight Time" by the Platters might have worked better. I just wish that the writing had been better and made more sense. Unfortunately, I don't think Matthew really focuses much on the details of the writing as he does on how things will look and sound. It's like the writer had ideas for all sorts of weird stuff and just threw it in there but it didn't really make sense and I really didn't feel that any sort of real profiling was done. Plus the whole Satanism thing was already brought up in another episode and that one gave information that this one contradicted. It wasn't the worst episode-- not nearly as bad as the ones by Janine, but it wasn't great. It left me just feeling meh. I guess after seeing Foundation where they had profiling and no personal drama I got my hopes up. If this had followed Janine's crapfest instead it might not have seemed as disappointing. We didn't need to see as much of the unsub as they showed us, we could have seen less of the girl with the flat affect, we could have seen less of the water torture. That bucket dumping scene could have been shortened quite a bit and still been effective. It was like something from a feature-length film instead, and might have worked in a film, but not in this format where we have so little time. I wanted to see the team really profiling like in Foundation. In this one the profiling was clearly an afterthought. Even Matthew said that the round table stuff was the hardest for him to imagine, so I think that got the least focus. I have to say the details with the set and props was amazing. The lighting was pretty cool. I noticed how the light really hit Matthew's eyes just right in some of the scenes so they had a shine to them. I would love to see what Matthew would do with a well-constructed and good plot. He hasn't been able to direct one like that yet. |
