Wow, nice third directorial outing for Matthew, congrats on job well done. Even though it was another one of those “heavy unsub known from the beginning type” story, this one was nicely written to capture and hold your attention from the get-go. Perfect casting of all the actors who captured the demented aura of their characters well! Even if they weren’t typecasted or demented (like Robert Englund as a taciturn police chief), they all still did a great job of adding to the unbalanced and creepy atmosphere. All the sets were well prepped to look sinister especially the old sanitorium with the weird shadows from the boxy windows. Even the old mansion looked evil despite all the furnishings that should have made it look homey. Matthew must have had a fun time picking out all the baroque furniture and knick-knacks!

I liked the way it was lit and photographed with different angles of the light playing on the faces at different venues. The morgue scene was the most interesting with the light coming from below or behind the faces so it looks eerier in that darkened room. There were a lot of close-ups on James and his sister’s faces and that was effective to convey how close yet claustrophobic their relationship was. A story like this would fit right into Matthew’s love for German expressionism. The haunted atmosphere was heightened by the use of light and dark contrast. The scenes when James is “talking” to his dead Mom used a nice fade in and out into a second image that was effective in making you feel the shift in reality.

So super-duper great job to all the cast and crew! Kudos to Sharon Lee Watson for a great story and MGG for bringing his/her vision to life!

I liked it too! It had a couple of lacks: we knew the unsub from the beginning and there was not enough Reid. But I loved all the creepy things. MGG sure is the master of creepiness! bitenails he seems to like big fireplaces and crematoriums..

sooo, Matthew will be chatting at http://cmsetreport.blogspot.com/ at 6pm PST, I think that is 3am in Europe.
I'll join in but don't know if I can get in any questions. I'm not sure how it works for that website in terms of whose questions get picked.
Never done it with that group but it sounds like it has good control without being draconian toward the participants.
Should be fun. CU there???

I asked the question about the influence of German Expressionism in how he used light and dark to shoot his scenes. I'll paste the answer here once they post the transcript.

babruin: for Matthew, do you think your affinity for German Expressionism influenced how you use light and dark contrast to heighten the mood, like in the morgue scene? very effective!

MGG: Absolutely. German expressionism. And abide by it as much as possible. The morgue scene (and with all the somewhat typical scenes). Ie. BAU, Salem PD, etc. I strived to shoot them in a way we have never done before. Canted with an undercurrent of dread seeping throughout. As if James’ psychosis was bleeding through the entire world. German expressionism style. Thanks.

awww, they fixed his typos!! he had typed aboslutely which made me go "excuuuuuuuuuse me!" :D

My quick belated thoughts on this episode: Overall, after a second viewing, I quite liked the episode. As always, way too much unsub and not enough team. I've read for a while now how people complain about how fast Reid seems to be speaking lately but I don't find that to be the case. I do find though that Garcia speaks way too fast. I have lately had to put the sub-titles on to understand what she is saying. Again at the end it is only the team that goes to the Manor, no police to back them up, even though they were just at the police station in their previous scene. I was kind of hoping that Hotch would get more of a beating at the hands of James just because he is the one that decided to split with Prentiss. They never seem to learn that splitting up is not a good idea. This was a pretty creepy episode and I do like creepy. I just think that with less unsub right away it would have been creepier.
