I know, that was the wackiest part of the whole script. Genius Reid thinks it's a really, really good idea to go in all by himself and disarm the unsub by acting like a wounded ,little lamb by keeping his eyes closed and head bowed???? Any self-respecting serial killer would have killed him right off the bat. Then again, it is TVland so you have to have the killer who talks too much before he tries to kill the good guys.

LOL. Yeah, it reminded me of the second episode of CM when Gideon was telling the story about the stuttering killer who had him at gunpoint. He confused the guy and upset him and then managed to get the upper hand. |

just like in RRRevelations? This could mean only one thing: that, as some of us suspected since a long time, he had somwhat enjoyed his brief vacation with Tobias....

Ok. My long-a$$ review of the episode. I probably repeat myself and such so I apologize. I typed most if it while watching the episode again. I wonder where the hospital was that was giving Reid the tests. Becuase it was almost 7am when it showed the clock. An MRI can take at least 20 minutes. Then he would have to get dressed and head to work. I liked how he was tapping his foot almost to the beat of the music. When they showed just his upper body shaking while he was wearing the dark sunglasses it looked like he was playing with himself and I was like "Stop doing that! It's already affecting your vision!!" :P The nurse said "One of your headaches" and Reid said "not really that long" and then "two days".. Does that mean he's been having headaches that last longer than 2 days? Was he lying when he said he had not been hallucinating? (I'm assuming this has been an ongoing problem and is getting worse if Reid finally was in for an MRI-- other people have suggested that they probably would have tried other things such as mild pain medication first). I couldn't tell if Reid was tapping his foot because he was in pain or if it was nervousness or both. I know when I have bad pain I tend to tap my foot a lot. Poor thing when he was going into the MRI machine and they didn't even give him the proper head casing thing for it. Looked like he was in pain during the test. He also looked so alone and frightened. I also couldn't tell if he was supposedly seeing the flashes of the crimes or if that was just the way they spliced it together to make it more interesting. Poor thing. I felt so bad for him when he was in the MRI machine squeezing the sheet. He looked so frightened. At least he had a pillow and didn't have to have his arms above his head though. When I went in for an MRI of my heart I had an IV in my hand and had to lay there with no pillows or cushioning with my arms above my head for 20 minutes. I kept getting muscle twinges and was fighting not to twitch. It was not fun. In reality, Reid would not have had a pillow. He would have had a cage-like thing around his head to hold it still. I was surprised when Prentiss asked him how he was doing and then Morgan erroneously said "You're never late", but rather than argue about having been late before Reid asks if the briefing started and then declares "Then I'm not late". In retrospect Morgan tends to exaggerate so maybe they were just pointing out that it is unusual for Reid to be late unless he has an excuse or something is wrong. Last time he came in with a new hair cut. Awww. Poor thing sitting in the dark corner of the jet. When Hotch said "Reid", and Reid made that little "Hm" sound. It seemed he hadn't been listening to the profile. Reid barely looked up at all while speaking and kept his eyes fairly squinted. Then he immediately heads back to the darkness and Hotch gives him a scrutinizing look but says nothing. I wonder if any of them suspected that he had a hangover... I think Hotch sent Morgan with Reid because he figured that Morgan could find out what was wrong with him. Morgan was the one that Reid used to confide in. I wonder what Seaver thinks of Reid. She obviously sees him as intellectual and "a thinker" but I believe he was already starting to feel sickly and withdraw from the team a bit before she ever met him. So she wouldn't know what to expect from him. Interesting that Reid asked her about the weather. I think he was feeling too icky to look it up himself (plus they wanted to have her give him an answer that would make him unhappy for the added drama). I loved the little expression he made when she said it would be sunny. He's all "great, more bright light to hurt my eyes". I just have to mention that I find it funny that CDs were hanging from strings as decorations. I wonder if they were AOL online ones... This seems like the first time since season 4 that Morgan has expressed concern for Reid. I liked that he actually sort of asked for Reid to give him some trivia on the area. Obviously he saw something was wrong because Reid wasn't talking. Poor kid just kept looking down, trying to avoid the sunlight. He looked so out-of-place with those clothes in that area. The people were all in tank tops and short sleeves and there is Reid in a button up shirt, tie, and cardigan. It would have been nice if Morgan had patted him on the arm or shoulder or something though. I really liked Julio. At first I thought he was thinking that he could manipulate Reid. He was able to observe him while they were interviewing the guy with the little dog (I know the breed but can't spell it -- and hey, it didn't bark at Reid!). But the more it progressed the more I thought that the guy was actually concerned for Reid. He probably did use cold reading skills to figure out what was wrong with Reid and give him suggestions. The scene where Julio started chanting was interesting. Reid just stared at him wide-eyed and at first I thought he was going to run out of the room. After watching it a few more times I came to the conclusion that Reid was just rather fascinated by watching the "class case of trans possession". I noticed that Reid's excitement over it seems to have made it so he could ignore his headache. Or maybe the headache subsided a little. It was odd when Hotch asked Reid if he was sure that he wanted to go back in to the interview room. Nothing bad had happened. Obviously Hotch was worried about him. Interesting that Hotch said "Are you sure?" and Reid said "That I remember?" all puzzled that Hotch would ask that. The fact that Hotch wanted to send Morgan with him showed he was very concerned-- but Reid didn't get snippy like he did in "Distress". Then Hotch asked Morgan if Reid was OK and Morgan said "I think so". So either Morgan is being dumbed down or maybe Reid is covering well (which is not clear to the audience). Or maybe because Reid was still responding, not getting snippy, and was able to focus on the job that Morgan assumed he was just having a bad day or that he was a little under the weather. Everyone gets sick from time to time so he might have figured that Reid was just coming down with something. I don't dislike Seaver's personality, but I do think it was not appropriate for her to be giving part of the profile. She should have been sitting back taking notes. It is far too soon for her to be taking on that role. It seems like they are trying to push her into the profiler role far too fast and it is not natural. At least Prentiss had to prove herself. Not only did Seaver NOT prove herself on the first go-round, she royally f***ed up! She should have been kicked out of the academy for the crap she pulled in her first episode. So to have her a couple of episodes later behaving like a full member of the team is very jarring. But even that was just a minor thing for me. I know a lot of people complained about the flashes of images and music and representation of the africal culture and religions, but I actually enjoyed those elements. Some people claimed it was so easy to figure out who the unsub was, but I was so focused on what might be wrong with Reid that I didn't even try to figure out who the unsub was. I actually liked that they threw in red herrings. I also liked that we had Hotch and Prentiss out together. The team seemed like a bit more of a family this time, but still not as much as in previous seasons. The physical affection is missing. Moving along, I felt so bad for Reid when he was rubbing his face and ripping the vest off. I know what it is like to feel like that. You want to crawl out of your own skin and you can't make the feeling stop. My biggest nitpick was that Reid (upon seeing the photograph of the house next door) didn't run downstairs or even just call out to the team and show them the picture and say "this is next door!" Instead we get Ninja!Reid sneaking out of the house without being noticed (some people said there was a back door and stairs) and went over to the house all alone in the dark. I don't care how bad his headaches are, that was just stupid. From past experience Reid knows better than to do that. When he wanders off by himself bad things happen (he gets kidnapped, witnesses someone getting shot and can't stop it, gets Anthrax).. Then he gets caught and rather than kill him like a real criminal would do, the guy starts ranting about his plan. Obviously he has mental issues. I actually found it funny when he was befuddled and said "What is wrong with you?" When I was watching I was wondering for a moment if Reid was going to actually be able to talk the guy down. I thought he might actually get the guy to surrender, but then he acted like he was completely losing it and was all pleading "dim the lights. please, I'll do anything!" I was thinking that it wasn't even light in there-- it was fairly dark. Which obviously confused the unsub as well. Then Julio was distracting the guy by making noise. I was pleasantly surprised when Reid picked up the pipe and BAM!!! I love how seconds later the team busted in all "FBI! Freeze!" only to find Reid up and about with the unsub on the floor with a nasty bump on his head. LOL. I wonder what they were thinking. That's the second time they rushed in to rescue Reid and got there just after he saved himself from the unsub. It was sweet of Julio to give him the bracelet. I loved that Hotch was actually concerned about Reid afterward. He basically let Reid know that he knew he was lying about pretending to have a headache. Then we had the nice moment where Rossi and Hotch exchanged a look showing mutual concern. Some people griped that Hotch didn't chew Reid out right then and there for running off-- but they didn't know what had happened. The unsub could have come to the room and forced Reid to remove the vest and then taken him over to the house (it's highly unlikely-- but they didn't know that it didn't happen that way). Besides, Hotch usually waits until they are on the plane to chew people out. And if he thought Reid had a headache he might not have chewed him out for fear of making it worse. Some people were upset that Reid was actually wearing the bracelet Julio gave him at the end. I think it fits with Reid's situation. He was frightened and desperate and would accept any help he could get. Plus there was a sentimental value to it. I felt so badly for him when he looked up at the doctor and said "what do I do now?" I have had firsthand experience with doctors telling me that the tests didn't show anything or not even being willing to run tests. I nearly died becaues a doctor refused to take me seriously. I had to get a second opinion and have emergency surgery. My father and I both had problems with test results being misread and it caused a lot of problems for us. I've also had times when my test results did not show the problem but other tests did show what was wrong. They just have to do the right tests. I admit I sort of wanted to smack the doctor when he suggested something psychosomatic (even though he tried to do it politely and delicately). I had a quack of a cardiologist that suggested I see a psychologist rather than run tests (the same d-bag didn't tell my father about a serious problem with his heart and my father had a heart attack because of it). Turns out I do have a heart condition, but that moron wasn't willing to even listen to me. Poor Reid. I know he overreacted, but having been in a similar situation I know how it feels. It must have been extra horrifying for him becuase he's feared all along that he was going to go crazy so and now he's probably wondering if he really is going crazy. Hopefully they won't just forget about it completely in the next episode.

suceress, just a few comments on your well thought out review. I'm envious that you can make such a long post, it would take me all day. I can type fairly fast but it takes me forever to get the words from my brain to my fingers. It looks like a CT scan to me and that only takes a minute or 2. I'm pretty sure Reid's headaches are an ongoing thing. A few years ago I was suffering from pressure headaches on the right side of my head. Aspirin, tylenol and even migraine pills had no effect. The only thing that helped a bit was advil, but the headaches would be back once they wore off. After many trips to different doctors I was finally sent to have a CT scan done. I can really feel for Reid as nothing wrong was found on mine as well. I was quite upset because I knew something was wrong. I was told that perhaps it was due to having high blood pressure at the time, which I had earlier been told could be a reason by another doctor. I really didn't believe that explanation but resigned myself to suffer with the headaches. A couple of months later I had a dentist appointment and found out that I had two impacted wisdom teeth on the left side. Once they were removed, the headaches went away. The dentist said that the wisdom teeth were pushing my other teeth to the right so I guess once they were removed the pressure subsided. The only time that I thought that Reid was hallucinating was when he was at the police station reading and then put his head back and closed his eyes. Some of it could have been just images that he's seen from the books or crime scene photos but one image was of a gate not securely closed, banging in the wind. Later when he is leaving the community centre house with Morgan and Julio, he hears the banging and looks surprised as he recognizes the gate. I assume as well that Reid left by the back door. The house where the prof. took Julio is behind the community centre at the end of an alley or a street. After they were called to the com. cntr. due to a disturbance Rossi was suspicious that the blood trail stopped all of a sudden and Morgan said that maybe the prof. wanted to make it look like he took Julio out the front door hoping to lead them in the wrong direction. I like the Seaver character but I was a bit put off that she was helping to give the profile as well. It's not so much what she said, I too figured out that the unsub was preying on the weak (I'm sure the police did as well), it's just that it was done in a way that made her look like she has been doing this for a while instead of being her very first time. I've been typing since about 1984 so I've had a lot of practice. I clock in between 120 to 140wmp on speed tests (depending on whether or not I'm having an off day). Some days my dexterity is just crap. Like today when I was trying to help my 87 year old friend put his cabinet door back on. I had the hardest time getting the screw driver to fit into the screw. (I did at least manage to catch him when the ladder slid and he was falling off). Although to be honest I didn't type that review up all at once. I typed it up over a couple of days. I was watching the video and pausing so I could type and then I went around various message boards and took breaks in between to think about things. Reid actually saw the gate BEFORE he had that vision in the police station. When he was out and he saw the goat head he happened to notice the gate swinging and making that banging noise. I think it was the fact that the gate kept doing something repetitive and was making noise that caught Reid's attention. I wonder if the writer for the episode had expected Seaver to have been working on the team for some time. Or perhaps in the writer's original concept she had JJ in the story but then JJ wasn't there. All of the things Seaver said to Reid in the episode seemed like things JJ could have said to him. Although JJ wouldn't have sounded quite as clueless while asking. She might not have asked about the religion aspect... But the rest of it seemed like JJ material. For the writer's first episode, I think she did a pretty good job. She had Hotch's concern and perception down pretty well. Not so sure on Morgan though. At least she had Morgan actually being nice to Reid. |

I watched the episode again today and Reid noticing the gate was after the vision, after the second trip to the community centre when they were taking Julio in for questioning. There was no gate banging during the goat head scene, at least not in the broadcast that was shown in my area. The guy just pointed Reid towards the community centre in the distance and then Reid had a reaction to the glare from the metal pan and then Morgan asking Reid if he was alright. But then again he could have seen the gate after the first visit but it just wasn't shown to us. I'm wondering if the pipe that Reid used to hit the prof. with was in the vision as well, I think I saw something at least similar looking. They kind of had a close up of it when Reid dropped it, as well as when the prof. used it to hit Julio over the head. I agree that the writer did a good job for her first episode. Considering her previous material I was kind of expecting a lot of semi-dressed guest stars and extras. I like that Hotch has been more in tune with his team's emotional state post Elle, he is not going to make the same mistake twice (at least I hope so). |
