erm, so let's hope it skips a generation, oh wait, make that skip two generations. Ummm, but I must say the hair has been looking really cool lately despite being shorter.

Tonal languages such as Mandarin, Cantonese, and Thai are a royal pain for people who grew up without listening to them because they are unable to actually hear the differences in some of the inflections. That is part of why it is so complex. I don't know how difficult the grammatical structure is though. I know that Wo Ai Ni translates in to "I love you". Ni is "you" and I think Wo is "love" but I could be wrong. I do like Jimmy Ye's song "Wo Ai Ni Bu Shi Ai Gei Bi Ren Kan". A friend of mine told me it roughly translates to "I love you but not for others to see". "bu" or "bu shi" being "not". I feel sorry for Japanese natives who were not exposed to English (or other languages) at a young age because they are unable to hear certain sounds such as V, L, R, and TH. They have a sound similar to R but it is actually somewhere in between R and L. It's made by putting the very tip of the tongue on the skin just above the top two front teeth. The sh sound is actually a bit harsher than the English version (I can't think of how to explain it better). It's like a softer form of ch I guess. I wonder if Matthew speaks any other languages. I think he can say a few phrases in French. What did you guys think of his thoughts on his shoes? LOL. I almost told him that it is common to start wearing more comfortable shoes when you get older. You start to be more concerned with comfort than fashion. |

Grammar in Mandarin (and also in Cantonese, I don't know Thai at all) is more or less non existent, at least according to the western point of view. It took me three years to get fluent in Mandarin, and when I say three years, I mean three years studyng about four- five hours per day. (to give you an idea, I was fluent in Hebrew only after about eight months, and it took me only three to speak and understand english correctly enough) I am fascinated by languages, I guess that learning them was my way to get over compulsive eating. (btw "wo" is "I", "ai" is "love" "n"i is "you". And "Wo Ai Ni Bu Shi Ai Gei Bie Ren Kan" "kan" is "see, watch" "bie" is "other" "ren" is "men", and your friend's translation is accurate. )Corean people for some reason have even more difficulties to pronounce English (not to mention French!) than Japanese... and Chinese go crazy trying to pronounce French, but they manage with less truble to master English...god, I LOVE languages!!! |

well, I've heard more corean people talking better english than japanese people... and I can tell since I study Japanese and my teachers sometimes speak in english. Still I think every language has its own difficulties to pronounce... I can speak great english but mu Japanese sounds so bad. My spanish accent is so full of entonations that makes some languages sound bad. Also Chinese seems very difficult, since it has about 10,000 kanji!!! OMG! |

MUCH more than that! But you actually need about 3000 to read almost everything, and the average common people don't know more than 1500, wich are enough to read a newspaper. I used to know about 1000, but they are soooo quickly fading away since I don't have time to practice much. *sigh*
