The evening sky was slowly transitioning from a purplish red to deep blue and then a jet black void. The city stood in the distance. It was merely a dark silhouette against the last of the light peeking from the horizon behind it. What was first a faint engine rumble - now grew louder. The sound closed in and the motorcycle sped around the curve of the sparsely forested road. Its sleek body seemed to be a dull red color when in the shadows cast by the trees but revealed a vibrant crimson when the occasional glow of the street light hit it. The driver, who's face was hidden behind a helmet, was wearing a black leather jacket, a backpack, and dark grayed-out jeans. Slowing down, the bike pulled of the road, into a rocky parking lot. Here stood a small building with a bluish neon sign, "Luigi's Cafe", flickering slightly in the right front window. Iris picked a spot to park near the entrance. Removing her helmet, she got off the bike and headed inside. The coffee aroma was typical here day or night. Iris found her usual seat - a booth on the left with a window view of the outside lot. She smiled and waved to the waitress who was wiping down a table on the other end of the room. Removing her backpack, she sat down. The place, though a little old and shaggy, had a rather welcoming homelike feel. This was the main reason why for the past two months she had come here on several occasions. Sat a table in the corner, Spirit casually leant back against his seat, arms folded. On the table before him sat an untouched cup of coffee. Signifying its temperature steam rose into the cool air, clouding Spirits face behind it. I had been a rather hectic week for the Zionite captain. His captaincy was put under scrutiny by the council due to his lack of serving crew and his ship was put in dry dock twice by some dodgy piloting on Rhilus's part. In the eyes of the Zion elite Spirit was proving more of a liability than of actual use. Although nothing had been said he knew his captaincy would be up for the taking any time soon if he didn't do something quickly. That’s why he found himself in Luigi's on this fateful night, he was scouting and it looked like his luck may have just changed. As she walked in through the doors Spirit was taken back by her beauty. Although he would not be one to show it, because she was obviously more than a decade his junior, he was willing to accept she was a fine young lady. As she took her seat on the opposite side of the room, near the window, Spirit removed his phone from his pocket and dialled operator. "Rhilus Crematoriums, you kill'em and we grill'em" Rhilus answered on the other end, "I'm sending you a picture." Spirit said, lifting his phone slightly and taking a picture with care not to be obvious, "Leave your crush till later and track down everything you can about the subject". "Right you are boss" Rhilus answered with glee, "I won't let you down", "I know you won’t" Spirit answered with a smirk. Placing his phone back inside his blazer pocket, Spirit finally lifted his cup and took a sip. Just as he had put the cup to his lip however his phone began to vibrate. Shaking his head with a sigh he lowered the cup and removed the phone, "Yes Rhilus, you can't have been this quick?", "She is hot" Rhilus replied, "Tell me that wasn't the only reason you called me" Spirit replied, placing his hand on his forehead in disappointment, "No boss. Just wanted to warn you that she has acquired interest from outside parties, she has a monitor program tracking her movements" Rhilus continued, his tone solemn in comparison to his earlier comments, "I'll take that into consideration" Spirit finished, replacing the handset within his blazer pocket once more. Lifting the coffee to his lips he was finally able to take a sip, the taste of the best coffee in town was incredible, he always loved a good cup of coffee. |

"Well hello and welcome back! What can get you this evening?" the waitress asked as she quickly walked up to the booth. "Thanks, I'll have..." Iris paused, hesitating for a second. "I'll just have a cup of coffee." "Alright, I'll be right back with your order!" the waitress responded adding a slight nod and walked away. Iris pushed the helmet, which she had placed in the middle of the table earlier, off to the side. Slouching back in her seat, she let her legs stretch out and tried to take at least one calming deep breath. Today had been another long day in the city. First, there was that pointless job interview. When cash was starting to run low, thats when she typically looked for work. A part of her wanted that feeling of security, knowing what tomorrow would hold. But on the other hand, she really didn't care for such a predictable lifestyle. It was monotonous and mechanical to her. Secondly, she was pretty sure - Iris sat back up and looked out the window. Her eyes briefly checking the lot and the road. - someone was following her earlier. The waitress was on her way back. She placed the cup and saucer down. Before leaving, she informed her customer: "If you need anything else, just let me know." Iris replied with a "thank you" then glanced around. There was a man sitting at a table, across the room, drinking something. He seemed to be minding his own business and this put her somewhat at ease. Iris took a couple of sweetener packets from the tray at the table. Tearing off the tops, she emptied them into her cup, then stirred the coffee with the mini straw. She took a quick sip then reached for her backpack. Unzipping one of the front pockets, she rummaged through whatever was in there, then took out a pen. Iris took a napkin from the tray as well and stared to mindlessly doodle, while trying to figure out who might be after her - if that was the case. Spoiler: click to toggle

As the girl doodled on the napkin, Spirit awaited the return phone call from Rhilus. The kid was lighting quick at finding information, one of the best in the business, that's why he got the operator job on the discovery. Casually he sipped at his coffee, glancing out the window. Something caught his eye. Bringing his sipping to a halt, Spirit stared deep into the bushes. The little light presented by the lot and the neon sign glinted off the eyes of an individual. His eyes appeared to be completely jet black and his skin matched that of the scenery. Immediately Spirit assumed some form of exile, possibly one of those that dwells in the woods, a dryad or similar. This creature however was acting distinctly different to any he had seen before, it seemed to be positioning it's self to better see through the young girls window. Monitor program Spirit thought to himself, just as his phone vibrated signalling Rhilus's calling back. Removing his phone Spirit answered the phone once more, "What have you got?". "Got good news and bad news. Good news is I reckon, from the info I have on her, she would be a safe unplug" Rhilus replied, "And the bad news?" Spirit continued. "The monitor programs are moving in on your position. I think they know you're there" Rhilus continued, the sound of frantic typing echoing down the line, "You need to move and move now", "Pro...gramsss? Shit, for now I am going to watch the girl. As long as we're in here then Luigi will protect us, guess it's time to meet our new friend" Spirit sighed, "Keep me updated". "Will do boss!" Rhilus replied with some conviction. Calmly placing his coffee down on the table, Spirit moved to the edge of his table and stood up. Slowly advancing toward her table Spirit straightened himself out and stood next to her. "I'm sorry ma'am may I trouble you?" he asked with his calm and welcoming tone. Edited by Spirit, Oct 9 2008, 11:47 PM.

Putting aside her pen, Iris crumpled up the napkin in her hand. She looked up at the man trying to figure out what he wanted. Neither his appearance nor tone of voice seemed threatening. No... no you may not trouble me. I already have my own troubles to deal with. However she wasn't going to say that. For all she knew right now, he might just be looking to borrow her pen. Things would get heated. And then she would have yet another enemy over something so silly. Besides, she really like this cafe and it would be a shame to never be allowed in here again. "Hmm that depends -" she replied with a faint smirk on her face. "How much trouble are you talking about?" |

I'm talking about the kind of trouble that will get you killed if you don't listen to me! Spirit considered saying those words out loud however, as per usual, they weren't his style. He was always more relaxed in his approach toward individuals who would soon be shown the truth; they would need it if they were to survive the onslaught to the sense's. "Unfortunately my dear I'm talking about a considerable amount of trouble" he said in a calming tone, "I am hear to deliver a message but I must make haste". Taking a seat opposite her, careful not to seem threatening in anyway, Spirit glanced out the window beside him. To his horror more had gathered now, most defiantly over ten. It seemed the system had many plans for this young girl and didn't wish a virus to stop them. As soon as he exited that door and agent would be on to him. Rhilus I hope you've isolated her code and are throwing me a bone here he thought as he looked into her eyes, "You are being followed by individuals you wouldn't understand. They're here to make sure I don't speak to you". Reaching into his inside pocket Spirit grabbed hold of a pen and a piece of scrap paper. Scribbling quickly on to it he wrote his cell phone number along with the date and time of a meet. Sliding it across the table he smiled "Keep it safe. I pray you will heed this advice; follow the signs and they will lead you to the truth. The matrix has you!” Spirit was a fan of cryptic messages but he always found the standard Zionite tagline 'the matrix has you' to be rather cliché. Problem was right now he couldn't think of any other way to inform her and thus he had only that option. No sooner had he spoken his final words he was up and out of her seat, moving swiftly toward the door. It was time to provide a little distraction. |

As soon as she realized he was actually going to talk about trouble, any sign of a smirk or smile dissipated from her face. Here to deliver a message... really? Wow, a classic threat but spoken like a real gentlemen. She saw him look out the window, and did so as well but could not see anything besides the poorly lit lot and the tress which surrounded the area. Iris continued to listen. Individuals I wouldn't understand... blah blah blah... She looked at the paper that was handed to her. None of this made any sense. In fact it sounded like nothing but nonsense. The man stood up and was obviously just going to walk away. "Seriously! This is what you're going to tell me!? Stop the bullshit, and tell me who you work for, what you really want!" The man seemed to ignore her and headed for the door. Iris got up to follow him, something caught her eye - out side the window, the lot was filled with dark figured men heading towards the cafe. "Oh my god..." Her jaw dropped, she grabbed her stuff and backed away from the window. "Please tell me they work for you - so you can just tell them I'll cooperate - and we don't have to do this the hard way." She pleaded with the one person who seemed to know what was happening and he was about to walk out the door. Shit. This wasn't good. No, "not good" is an f-ing understatement. I'm seriously trapped in here! Damn what was I thinking! Coming to a place like this - middle of nowhere. Great way to die Kira! |

Spirit continued on his path toward the doorway ignoring her words until she paused, her "Oh my god" catching Spirits attention. He stopped, placed his hands in his pockets, and turned around. He saw her eyes, the hint of fear, and the sense of the unknown rattling around her mind. "Unfortunately my dear, they do not share allegiance with me and thus the hard way is the only" Spirit said, remaining distinctly calm and collected, "They are watching you because they sense your potential, your potential for the truth, something I wish to show you". Stepping close to her, trying his best not to look intimidating, Spirit lifted his hands from his pocket and gestured towards a stall at the bar, "Please take a seat, for in here a guardian smiles upon us". Just as he finished speaking his cell phone began to vibrate, "Excuse me". Turning and walking to the other end of the bar Spirit answered the phone, "Rhilus what have you got for me?", "Bad news boss. Twenty targets surrounding the place with a perfect perimeter. Good news is communication to and from them is minimal, no agents on radar yet" Rhilus replied, his tone as energetic as usual. "Keep me updated. Any agents and I want warning!" Spirit replied, "You got it!". Placing the phone back in his pocket, Spirit composed himself and then returned his attention to the girl, "I'm sorry where were we?". |

Only now was it becoming more apparent to her that this man might actually be trying to help her. That maybe what he was talking about - following signs, and some matrix, may actually mean something. She stood by the bar with her eyes fixed on the entrance door and waiting for the man to finish his phone conversation. "Ok... uhh... let me get this straight - they are after me because I know something - or rather will learn the truth about whatever this... this truth is. And they probably have this place surrounded by now." She sad, glancing at the other widows. Iris was freaking out inside her head. She felt so caged and just wanted to run. Maybe I could handle one or two of these guys, but there's just too many of them. "Look, I don't know who this guardian is, but my motorcycle is about six feet from the door! If I could just..." Iris froze. She realized her attempt at escape would fail with one pull of the trigger from anyone of the men out there. "Wait a second!" She lightly shook her head as if to clear out any other thoughts. "They don't want me dead? Do they? I mean if they did... they would have taken care of that before I got here..." |

Spirit lowered his head as he sat to the bar, "No my dear what waits with them is a fate much worse than death. It's the fate of a slave". Tapping the bar twice, a mochachino arriving in seconds, he lifted the cup to his mouth and took a sip. "However my dear" he continued, lowering the cup, "Your escape idea may be somewhat of use... with a litte distraction". Taking another couple of mouthfuls, his gaze to the ceiling suggesting he was deep in thought, Spirit suddenly twigged. Placing the cup back on it's saucer, the boiling hot coffee all but gone, he removed the phone from his pocket. Before he placed it to his head he smiled, "My friend is probably displeased with my constant calling". No sooner had he put it to his ear did Rhilus answer, "Yeah boss?". "I need the nearest safe house, preferably within the city limits yet not to far from here" Spirit spoke, "Way ahead of you boss. I got one on Connole Avenue. It's about two miles give or take" Rhilus replied, the sound of frantic typing echoing in the background, "uploading GPS directions to your phone now". With a beep the directions arrived on Spirits phone, "Good job. I'll call you from there, for now the lady gets my phone. Spirit out", "Right you are boss! Rhilus replied as the phone feel silent. Sliding his phone across the bar to Iris, Spirit nodded. "Take this my dear and when I shout 'go!' jump on your bike and follow it's directions DO NOT LOOK BACK!" Spirit spoke, his voice stern and to the point, his strong british accent shining through, "I will provide a little distraction". With that he withdrew his 5.0mm, shining silver, desert eagle, revealing an SMG and another smaller black pistol holstered under his blazer. "I come prepared for these situations my dear" he smiled, standing from his stool, "ready?". |
