[Taken from Theoretical History File 5C] The Nature of the Matrix is not something the Zion Scholars actively debate and discuss, but from the pieces of information reported by the One and those associated with him they have Theorized that the History of the Matrix itself can be broken down into supposed “Version's” of the Matrix, of which, according to the machines, there were three preceding the One's Emergence. The reports of Neo and Morpheus are most notable in that envoy's of the machine world told them directly, where all other reports have come to light following contact with exile inhabitants of these previous matrices. It is from these varied reports that the following has been compiled. The First Matrix – Paradise. As Described by Both the Architect and the Agent designated Smith, The First Matrix was designed to be an Idyllic paradise where war and other Negative states were absent and none Suffered. However the machines had not taken into account that whilst the human mind dreams of perfection, it also needs a basis in reality with which to compare. This conflict in bases caused the Inhabitants of this Matrix to reject the programming in an attempt to wake up from this obvious dreamworld. According to Agent Smith “Entire crops were lost” referring to the deaths of millions upon millions of Humans. The Second Matrix – Jaded Fantasy. And so with the failure of the first Matrix, The machines redesigned the Matrix as a world that presented more of a danger to it's inhabitants. The “evil”aspects of human existence were reintroduced and creatures that previously only existed in human imagination were given form and free reign to terrorise. The likes of the Merovingian were created during this time. Unfortunately this Matrix lifespan was less than the previous disaster and this version was also abandoned. The Third Matrix – Reccurring reality. The machines realizing that the mistake they had made, redesigned this final version of the matrix as to represent Mankind at the height of it's brilliance, notably the late twentieth Century. Within this Matrix the machines created the Oracle in order to discover the best way of presenting the Matrix. After a period of careful research, the Oracle reported that the key was choice. And so the machines created the the One program which would be the pinnacle of the unbalanced nature of choice. This Program kept the Matrix running for 6 cycles before the most recent One, Neo in an unprecedented act failed to return to the source as his predecessors had. This through the Matrix into chaos. A Chaos which the newly “awakened” Smith took full advantage of. Finally after an epic struggle the unbalanced equation which keeps the Matrix running was balanced and The Matrix reset itself into it's newest version. The Fourth Matrix - hope filled unknown This is the present form of the Matrix, It is essentially identical to the last with the only addition being that the freedom of choice to leave the Matrix has been given back to the inhabitants. |
