Laundry Soap Recipe

1 - 5 gallon bucket with lid ($5-$8, can get at H Depot or Ace Hdwe)
1 - Bar Fels naptha soap ($1.29, I bought mine at Ace)
1 - Cup Washing Soda ($3.89 55 oz box not baking soda, got mine at Ace they ordered it for me)
1/2 - Cup Borax (20 mule team, I had a box did not need to purchase any)
Tap Water

Grate bar of soap, put in pan with 3-5 cups warm water (use a stainless pan) - let stand for a hour so it really softens up, over medium low heat cook, stirring constantly till soap is all melted.

In bucket put 2 gallons very warm water, add borax and washing soda, stir till dissolved. Add soap mixture, stir until mixed well. Fill pail with more hot water and stir again till mixed. Cover and let sit overnight to thicken. In the morning you will need to stir your soap again, it gels up after it sits (I used a whisk and kinda beat mine up to get it it it wasn't lumpy). Your soap concentrate is done!!

How to use - take a plastic jug (milk jugs work great), add 2 quarts of soap mixture and 2 quarts of water, shake up to mix the 2 together. Your laundry soap is now ready to use. Shake bottle every time you use it because it sorta gels up between uses.
This recipe makes 10 gallons of laundry soap.

Top load machine use 3/4 cup per load

Front load machines use 1/3 cup soap

YOU WILL HAVE TO STIR YOUR CONCENTRATE every time you need to get some out of the bucket, it always gels up.

Have you used any yet?
How is it for cleaning?
Do the clothes smell good after?

This is way cheaper than those $15 bottles of Gain that I've stockpiled. I've done the math & your recipe is about one third of the cost.

Have all my ingredients together. Everything was available at Kroger.

In researching this I discovered many other uses & recipies.

Here are a few;

Oven Cleaner

Step 1

Mix ΒΌ of a cup of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of Borax in a glass bowl. Be sure to thoroughly mix the baking soda and Borax.

Step 2

Slowly add white vinegar to the dry ingredients. The baking soda will cause the white vinegar to bubble, this is normal and to be expected. Stir the mixture constantly until it forms a paste like consistency.

Step 3

Wipe the inside of your oven with a sponge or rag dampened in plain water. Dip the damp sponge or rag rag into the baking soda, Borax, white vinegar mixture and scrub the surface. Work on one surface area at a time. Start with the top, then the back, one side, then the other, bottom and finally the oven door.

Step 4

Wet another rag and wipe off the oven cleaner before moving to the next area. Rinse the rag after you wipe each time.

Dry Detergent

1 bar Fel Naptha soap
1 cup borax
1 cup washing soda

Combine borax and soda.
Grate soap into mixture.
Store in a dry place.
Can be made into liquid later using the recipie above.

Dishwasher Powder

Equal parts borax and baking soda.

I make the dry laundry detergent and it works very well. My boys play football, so when I wash their smelly football clothes, I add a cup of white vinegar. We have been very pleased with the results. You need to use a food processor to grate the soap or you'll wear out your arm!

I also saw the recipe for dishwashing soap. Haven't tried it yet, but I plan to...
