Howdy, I have opened a thread over on the "learning center" about HAM RADIO. That is where I would like to concentrate all the Q&A's if we could... However, This topic may belong here, as a sub group to other considerations within defense. Elsewhere, it has been noted, that our "FED" can and will listen in or read our mail "AT WILL"... This is actually being aided by the major internet vendors and providers; along with the much discussed programs running on Cray Computers in the basement of the NSA...they are NOT just looking for crazy arabs! There are many things that "we" do and can do under our nomal constitutional rights of free assembly and search rules, etc... Weekend camp outs with long walks in the woods while avoiding other citizens come under this general heading too. But, we must do them with the KNOWLEDGE in mind that someone may be watching or trying to join us to then REPORT back to xyz agency, etc... There are only two truely secure methods of communication that I know of... #1. Is "face to face" spoken words ... One on one only... In a place that is shielded from prying eyes or listening devices. The #2. Is to use what is called a "ONE TIME PAD" or other method of ENCRIPTION which uses a changing code basis or key, the most often used ones involve TRUE RANDOM NUMBERS. IF someone is willing to devote about a week's worth of CRAY time -- they can break "simple ones" of this type just by random selection...but, the time required should offset any value of the message content. Now, we come to some basic questions: What do we need to say and to whom. When do we need to do this. (once or repeatedly) Where do we need to be "able" to do this? NOTE: I have to say that there are some rather obscure "digital modes" of legal usage on the Ham radio bands that will keep out all but a very few from "reading our mail"... All we have to do is become proficent in their use and agree on "which one" of about 20 methods we will use at any given date/time. HOWEVER, there are issues with using "coded messages" over Ham radio band...it is not allowed under FCC rules...but, in some possible future events we may not "worry" about such, eh? The combination of the two methods...i.e., ONE TIME PADS for encryption and then transmit the resulting "groups of letters" via the digital ham mode...would give us the best of both worlds, and might even be usable for a short period of time before an effort was made to listen in... Ham's do "self govern" to some extent...The only real way for the FCC to start getting interested in our use would be if some ham got mad since he couldn't "listen in himself"...and, that complaint could take some weeks to months to work it's way through the FCC mess... There may even be an interesting angle here, one of the didgital modes is FAX... That may sidestep any such concerns! Coded groups with photos or designs on the same page...could look like doodling, eh? There are many more ideas and angles to this topic... Secure communications are needed for any undertaking... The ability to use a soundcard from a computer, which can be in different boxes, to do your sending for you via a radio CAN BE MADE MOBIL...Doing so from a "hand-held" position may get a little tough...but, these new PDA's and the ultra lite compurters can work too... FYI: GPS can be married with ham radio for automatic position reporting..it's called APRES. |
