I was thinking about it and RPGs are a lot like comic books, but there is one difference between RPGs and comic books, and it is something that often times leads to the demise of an RPG. When a player creates a character, that character is basically the star of their book. However, this book about this character exists in a connected universe amongst other characters with various events happening in this universe that affect all of them. There are editors and chief writers who make sure that people aren't misusing a character or doing something that might effect continuity, and in the case of crossover events, often times writers are forced to adapt their story to the crossover event, but more often than not a writer is in control of their characters and their stories. RPGs are a lot like this, but the problem comes from the relationship between the mods and players. Mods tend to micromanage and control the abilities and activities of the players. Now this logic does works both ways, because if everyone is the star of their own book, everyone wants their character to be the most powerful, and this does need to be controlled. However, in trying to make sure every character is balanced, you shouldn't forget that the reason why you want to create balance is so that everyone can be the star of their own book. When mods over micromanage the workings of the players, the players become resentful of the mods and leave, and no new players will join because nobody wants to be treated with that level of disrespect. So the critical difference between an RPG and a comic book is that often times in RPGs, the mods forget that their book is not the only book, that each one of us has our own story to tell. This is the first RPG I have been a part of in a long time, and I'm very glad that I'm here, but for the past few RPGs I have been involved in I was a mod, and I may have lost touch with what it is like to be a player. I decided to spend some time reflecting on the nature of mods and players and this is what I came up with. I hope that we, as fellow writers, can keep this in mind as we work together to create this universe. |

TL;DR. Joke, joooooke. That was insightful if a bit of an odd comparison. Executive meddling compared to moderatoring? Harsh man, harsh. |
