Wayne's Cabin

Wayne arched an eyebrow at her reaction to his questioning if she was o.k. He may not have had much experience in terms of dealing with women across the course of his life, but he was certainly intelligent enough to tell when somebody was just telling him what they thought he wanted to hear. Her single word held no sincerity in it, something that bothered him far more then he let on. However, he was unsure if she was simply upset with him, or if there was more going on then she was revealing, though he was leaning more towards the "something more going on" theory, as he had suspected for some time now.

He simply nodded, his smile fading somewhat as he made his way towards the food that he had brought. He plopped down unceremoniously onto the grass next to the basket and reached inside, then removed an apple and took a bite. For being such a delicious apple, he found the taste to be dull and himself totally uninterested in even eating it.

He swallowed the bite he had taken and glanced at her as she questioned him about how long he would be staying at the cabin. This was further indication that something was going on as she had used the singular "you" instead of "we" which to him, indicated that she hadn't planned on staying with him, despite what she had told him before. He looked away, starring into the distance at nothing in particular. "I dunno," he said with a small shrug. "Until I feel like it's time for me to move on I guess.........." he trailed off and took another bite into his apple.

Lily frowned looking down for a moment, she had made him unhappy, she could see that. And it bothered her far more than she was willing to admit at the moment. She sighed lightly, she just couldn’t do this to him, she could not see him unhappy on her behalf. But to give any more of herself would be a mistake. It would be unfair to him, to let him continue on the way he had, to let whatever was going on between them grow into something more complicated. She decided then that tonight she would have to talk to him, he at least deserved that much. To know exactly what he was getting into and be given the chance to walk away. And for his sake, she hoped he would walk away, even if that hurt her.

She walked over to him and sat down next to him and gave him a small smile. “I’m sorry… I was upset… worried.” She said quietly. “I did not mean to upset you.” She said looking away. It bothered her to see how much it affected her to see him unhappy. And as much as she tried to push him away, she could not. Not for long at least. The rational side of her told her to stay away from him, to spare him the complications her life would bring him. And to spare herself the weakness she opening herself to. “You should not have followed me that far down if you could not hold your breath for that long…” She said in a reproaching tone of voice. She was not used to having someone else to worry about. Her parents were the last people she had ever worried for and they had died long before she could get used to the feeling.

Wayne glanced over at her as she sat down next to him, somewhat surprised as he hadn't been expecting it. He was even more surprised when she smiled and apologized to him. He opened his mouth to speak but stopped when she told him that he shouldn't have gone so far if he couldn't hold his breath. He sighed inwardly, she was right of course. He really hadn't been thinking, instead too intent on following her into the depths of the lake. However, in his defense, he had no idea of her affinity with the water, so he assumed that if it was ok for her, that it would be ok for him too. He sighed inwardly again, this was plain stupidity on his part, something that he rarely engaged in. And to make matters worse, he caused her to worry, simply because he was unable to accept his own limitations.

"It's ok.....you have nothing to apologize for Lily......" he said as he stared into her eyes. "If anything, I should be apologizing to you for worrying you needlessly." He hesitated for a moment before reaching out and gently laying his hand across hers, partially because he wanted to comfort her and partially because he suddenly desired some sort of physical contact with her. "And your right, I shouldn't have been so reckless...." he trailed off, unsure of what else to say.
