AQ and OBL are nothing more than the bogeyman to keep the masses scared....A modern day real life Goldstein.
You make this assertion, yet you do not back it up with any evidence whatsoever. There is evidence, on the other hand, that al Qaeda is not at all fictional. What we know about the planning and execution of the 9/11 attacks evidences an organizational hierarchy. If al Qaeda does not exist, who were coalition forces fighting in Tora Bora?

Is al Qaeda the highly structured, supremely dangerous organization that much of the media makes it out to be? Probably not.

Is al Qaeda more of a movement and ideal than strict organization? Probably.

Can we conclude that there is no group of individuals fighting under and with bin Laden and al-Zawahiri that are referred to by themselves and others as al Qaeda? Hell no.

BRIGADIER ROGER LANE , COMMANDER
BRITISH FORCES
INTERVIEWER : But how many Al Qaeda have you captured?

LANE : We haven’t, uh, captured any Al Qaeda, but…

INTERVIEWER : And how many have you actually managed to kill here in south-east Afghanistan?

LANE : We haven’t killed any.

DAVID COLE , PROFESSOR OF LAW
GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY
They say “terrorist sleeper cell.” That’s what...they...they call the Lackawanna people a terrorist sleeper cell, the Detroit people a terrorist cell, the Portland people a terrorist cell. But when you look at the details, the facts just don’t support that, and they have not proved that any group within the United States has plotted to engage in any terrorist...uh..activity within the United States in all of the cases that they've brought since 9/11.

Remember the Detriot terrorist cell they captured....Listen to their defence lawyer.
WILLIAM SWOR , DEFENCE LAWYER
DETROIT SLEEPER CELL TRIAL
The government had a legitimate concern at the beginning, but they let that concern, and they took it, and they made it a panic. They had reasonable questions and took them and made a complete fantasy out of them. They started out with a conclusion and then filled in all the blanks to the questions. So this was totally driven by the need, or the desire to have terrorists. You build this conclusion based on this assumption, and this assumption, and this assumption, and, sure, if you go... if you build assumptions upon assumptions, you can go anywhere!

INTERVIEWER : It’s a work of imagination.

SWOR : It is. It’s a fantasy, and it's a fantasy that it was politically expedient to sell.

Think of this way, there are lots of terrorists around the world with different goals, they can be classed as Al-Qaeda or linked to them in some manner, but Al-Qaeda exists but it is not a terrorist organisation, it is a name to sell fear.

Taliban mainly, they were then accused of being Al-Qaeda.

Of to Gitmo, no trial.....Hence so many are being released without charge.

I would have to agree.

For the simple reason, the war on terror is pissing off muslim nations with our occupation of their lands. So they will always be people willing to fight for their cause!

The insurgents in Iraq who want the US out....are they AQ? Or are they just an organisation or groups that wants the US out?

Because there was no/little AQ in Iraq pre 9/11 for the simple fact OBL and Saddam didn't like each other much

They have created a monster so to speak.

Isn't that amazing, something we can agree on! ;)
