I did some diggin a while back and posted the results on my own site...
Apologies if this has been discussed, I did a quick search and found nothing

A USGS photograph from 1994 showing the flight 93 crash site, with the wing marks in the ground already. In 1994!

Yes, I've seen that before. In the '94 photo though, the gash in the terrain is in a different position than the crash hole, you can see that it is parallel to the dirt road that goes in between the trees and the crash hole is in a different position, more perpendicular to that road and up a little further.

Certainly interesting, when I first saw this I looked at both pictures for awhile. Also interesting is the erosion mounds in the '94 photo, it does kind of show the softness of this terrain, but I wondered what could have caused that gash, could something like really be caused by natural effects?

Though that isn't the same gash, it's definately a strong possibility that a similar gash was in the position of the crash hole in 2001, given the erosion and effects of nature as seen in the '94 photo that weren't there in 2001. Wish there was a satellite shot in 2000-01 before the crash, that would have been interesting to see for sure.

This photo has always interested me. Looking north - clearly the impact intersected some sort of ditch - notice the weeds are unscathed and upright in the ditch:
