Who is being made fun of here. Us, or the people who think Al Quada is responsible? Edited by Sureshot, Jul 15 2008, 11:25 PM.

Come on guys, do you really think the onion is making fun of those who believe Al Qaeda were responsible? At the least they are just satirizing the entire debate but most likely are not siding with truthers on this one.
Who are the Al Qaeda supporters? |

The onion kind of makes fun of everybody don't they? Also, why should we give a shit about the onion? They are fake news. We should be more concerned with the real news shouldn't we? |

What makes this funny is how slickly the debate is presented conceals the complete ridiculousness of the scenario. We have a character playing an al qaeda operative who is so pissed off that his organisations act of global terrorism is being denied he has brought documents on to this major news network determined to show his groups role and responsibility for the mass murder of thousands of people. This is a pretty surreal argument! He gets so worked up he threatens the truther author to go to the location for the next terrorist target! This is after he nearly gives away the location of Osama "why is Osma safe in...in...somewhere"! Why debunking websites have found this particularly funny is that they can recognise the familiar arguments. As soon as the truther author says 'melted core', the al qaeda character groans 'oh here we go', anyone who has spent years correcting truther claims about 'melted' rather than 'weakened' steel will relate to the depth of his groan. After the al qaeda op explains that no thermite was involved just planes, the truther accuses him of being 'closed minded'. This bizzare logic is all to familiar to debunkers, it reminds me of the David Cross sketch where he is mocking Bush's arguments for the war on terror. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrYtt8kSRV8 If someone admits responsibility for something and there is a body of evidence to support it, at what point is it "closed minded" to accept it? "Are we a nation of 6 year olds?" as Cross says. The evidence that the al qaeda op produced is rejected as forgery, this is a common accusation from truthers, any evidence that runs contrary to their claims can be dismissed as forgeries. The al qaeda op mocks this by saying "me and Bush we go out, we hang" as if an operative whose goal it is to remove US presence in the middle east and to fight secular liberalism would hang with Bush. The truther is the main focus for ridicule here but the satire is much wider. The rolling ticker news feed at the bottom mocks the medias promotion of banal viewer opinion "family finds trip to Mount Rushmore only slightly more exciting than looking at photo of Mount Rushmore". All in all it is an entertaining piece but not supportive of the truth movement in any way. |

Thank you Bernie, I did not want to explain the satirical humor in the Onion video to Domenick. I don't think the majority of truthers who have watched that video came to the same conclusion as him. At least I hope not. |

I know, I hate how any cable news will stop a heated debate that has only been going on for a minute and a half and say they are out of time only to come back from commercial break to talk about some inane celebrity gossip. I guess they do this because most americans who watch cable news have a 2 minute attention span. So annoying. |

It seems the entire sketch went over your head. An "Al-Qaeda" operative used the ignorant, "here we go, again" lines of the debunkers to equate their absurdity. The Truther was presenting actual physical evidence and the "Al-Qaeda" rep was trying to accept blame using planted or fabricated evidence, much as the debunkers do, (i.e. a fake Osama video surfaced, in which an Osama "look alike" actor claims responsibility, was the only evidence of his alleged involvement). The video is obviously showing the absurdity in believing that Al-Qaeda was responsible. |

someone needs to explain it to you and your buddy because you're both missing me..... al qaeda : "me and bush we go out, we hang" i'm not even getting into the pools of molten steel that you and bernie seem to think didn't exist. |

Punisher, In no way does the line "here we go again" equate to an absurd argument. It's a common figure of speech. It's the tone of the actors voice that has resonance with debunkers. I currently feel that familiar sigh coming upon myself as i read you and Domenick's replies. You say that the truther was 'presenting physical evidence', you misunderstand what physical evidence is, he was repeating tired and misleading information, such as 'melted cores'. You then say the 'al qaeda' op was trying to accept blame using 'planted or fabricated evidence', you again misunderstand, he was presenting fictitious evidence that was used as a comedy device to mock the truther. You suggest that debunkers do this with the fake Osama video, this is again untrue, the accusations in the early loose change editions regarding the fake bin laden tapes have disappeared for a good reason, they were completely unfounded. |

As Revid suggested, i dont think many of the truthers on this board see the need to see this as truther satire. There are attempts at truther satire, here is an example. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGm3_RltqQg&feature=related I'm sure Margaret Cho or the few other truther comedians could attempt to satirize debunkers or the 'official story'. To try and claim this onion piece as supporting the truth movement is frankly ridiculous.
This is what causes the sighs and the groans. I have explained this thousands of times over the years. To call it 'pools of molten steel' is misleading. There is anecdotal evidence that there were pools of metal, that a few people suggested may have been steel, we simply don't know what they were. To suggest they were 'steel' is disingenuous. There could be many different explanations as to what those pools were. |

I'm just thrown back by all of this powerful conversation going on here. It's just too much. I laughed when I saw it the first time. It's a critique of both sides. Bernie you don't have to regurgitate your favorite facts to get the points across on a site that as you can see is sooooo popular. Every truther has seen the information you have dribbled on there and that doesn't make your argument any stronger. You can go pick up a mechanics book if you would like further your research on the issue like I am doing. Pretending to sit and fight the good fight on an onion piece is just hilarious. Reading your stuff just adds to the humor. Do you realize that maybe that piece was made to get people to bicker over the vague things they put on there. Naw |

I agree. I just enjoyed the piece for the humor in it - and it is a piss. Many of the people who work at the Onion, if you think about it, have to be critical thinkers and probably know the true score. Their job is lampooning the ridiculousness of mainstream media - which leads me to want to believe they' re pretty astute about issues. At any rate, I've always enjoyed their work. Don't read too much into this one guys. Just enjoy! |

The operative states that "thermite cannot bring down a building" (which it can) and then states, "we used an airplane, which is really big", yet it cannot bring down a building. He then cited evidence that doesn't exist, such as receipts. Secondly, are you implying that you believe the fake Osama videos are real? I have yet to see a video expert who claims that the videos are legit. http://newsbusters.org/blogs/john-stephenson/2007/09/12/digital-forensics-expert-osama-video-definite-fake Fox News reported his death back in December 2001: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,41576,00.html http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/osama_dead.html |
