Apparently e^n contains invalid characters. I don't know why so many sites and companies think ^ is an invalid character but it's fine! Fascists

suffering through some work! (and posting of course!) And I think it's the marble-like image that is causing my slow load times. I'll change to the other forum scheme and see if that helps. EDIT: nope that didn't help. I'm wondering if it's the advert at the bottom of the pages... cuz when I click "Reply" or "Edit" I have no issue loading, and there is only one ad on the page. Check it out guys. Thanks! Edited by look-up, Jan 16 2008, 02:47 PM.

The ^ is usually reserved for control characters. The beginning of the character set has 26 control characters. 0 is "null" 1 to 26 are "Control-A" to "Control-Z" usually shown as ^A - ^Z 27 is the "Escape" character which tells a printer or console that a cammand is following. 28, 29, 30, 31 are directional controls (up, down, left, and right) 32 is the first printable character, a space " ". In the case of the BBCode, [ is a control character indicating an upcoming tag, and on some systems if I typed [truth], the system would say "can't recognise this tag" and ignore it, leaving a blank spot on the screen. On such systems one would then type ^[truth] to tell the system that the [ is NOT a control character. Does that help? |

Please no! I do think all the table gridlines are a bit much, but I will beg all administrators, please don't fill up the navigations pages with pictures as was being done on LCF2. Reading a list is far easier when it's a list. If you must put in pictures, give them their own column so that they are to the left of the list items, not above or below them. |

Right now, the way my sinuses are, I'm praying for "The Coming of the Great White Handkerchief", by Zarquon! I note that there is a left hand column on the navigation pages which carries images of folders--if you can squeeze pictures INTO those boxes to replace the folders with similar sized images, I promise not to complain about them. |

This is not actually entirely true, although it does have merit. Yes, ^ is typically used to denote non printable characters, but it is not reserved in any manner. I cannot find any reference to ^[ code] being used as an escape for bb code on this site, but in general (UNIX) use the escape character would be a backslash, so \[ code\] or \[ code]. (Spaces added to not break bbcode!) I appreciate you trying to explain it but the most likely reason for it not being accepted is that they have simply allowed a-z, A-Z, 0-9 and basic spacers like _ and -. Unfortunately people don't consider those of us with esoteric names ![]() Thanks for your reply anyway. Edited by exponent, Jan 18 2008, 12:03 PM.
