Nice for them. My hospital's strategy is to give us all the mist as there is plenty of that, no injectable. When all is said and done, this mandating crap will come back to haunt hospitals. We are a nursing "magnet" institution. I don't think the magnet credentialling body will like mandates with job termination threats. Nurses as a whole are passive. If we all took the mandatory two week suspension before final deicsion to not vaccinate and be terminated, we'd cripple the healthcare system. Alas we have morals and ethics and need a job. Honestly all the nurses who are out sick have gotten the shot. None of us hold outs are sick. One of my atending Docs gave this report during rounds last week RE: our hospital workers: Seasonal flu last year: % of people who got injectable vaccine who got flu: 3% % of people who got mist who got flu:6% % of people who got no vaccine who got flu: 9% So, let me look at this for a minute. We have roughly 2000 nurses. Last year lets say our vaccine rate was 50% (probably it was alot higher,if I took my unit as an example, but the national average of nurses getting vaccinated is around 30%. I'll say my institutin was 50% last year, but was probably alot higher. 50% of 2000= 1000 RN with no vaccine, 9% flu rate = 90 nurses without vaccine who got flu Of the remaining 1000 who got vaccinated, based on my experience on my unit, I'd say 30% got the mist and 70% got the shot. 300 mist, 6% get flu= 18 700 shot, 3% get flu= 21 Total = 39 flu cases I'm not a statistician, but 39 vs 90 isn't all that great to me, but probably is very stat. significant. I'd just expect the protection to be alot greater. Even if all nurses got the shot, with these stats, there would have been 78 flu cases versus 180 if we didn't get vaccinated. 180 would not have shut the place down, given not all get sick at once over the season. I'm sure all you math whizzes out there will tear me to shreds, but I'm just going by data from my institution. Those numbers for vaccine dont seem all that comforting. I think I'd rather take my chances and enjoy two cans worth of tuna sandwiches rather than inject equivalent amount of mercury into bloodstream. Edited by mid life rethinker, Oct 25 2009, 11:50 AM.

Today i had to give some kids both the seasonal and h1n1 flu shots. Both shots contain 25mcg mercury each. I went to the FDA website to review the mercury "safe exposure" guidelines listed there. The EPA allows 0.1microgram per kg per day and the WHO allows 0.47 mcg/kg per day. One kid was 12 kg and one was 17 kg. They can safely receive according to the guidelines 1.2 mcg and 1.7 mcg per EPA and or 5.6 mcg or 7.9mcg per WHO. Well today i injected them with 50mcg each. Before doing so I went to the attending physician, the pharmacist and the head of Infectious diseases. NOBODY GAVE A SHIT. This is a crime . I was the only person concerned. Everyone is so scared of the flu that injected mercury is a non-issue. i need a new job. |

This morning someone from Kaiser called me about scheduling for overdue routine stuff. I rejected all but blood tests (cholesterol, etc). Nothing was said about flu shots. She put me down for what I wanted, to pass onto doctor. No pressure from her to do the other things on the list for me. Soon after another call came confirming doctor approved lab work. At my convenience within the next month I can go directly to the lab. Toward end of first call I had asked if they were seeing lots of swine flu. Answer was ... 'No, just a few cases'. She didn't sound concerned in the slightest. No pandemic happening here in Ontario, CA. |
