http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gATbHPAOvTZvh1rFjYYG2oxyf1GA Plane hijacked in Mexico: officials (AFP) – 51 minutes ago MEXICO CITY — An Aeromexico flight from the popular Mexican tourist resort of Cancun was hijacked Wednesday with 104 people on board and landed in Mexico City, officials and media reported. "An Aeromexico was hijacked at Cancun airport and has landed in the airport in the Mexican capital," said an official with the prosecutors office. Witnesses said about 100 people were seen leaving the plane as it stood on the tarmac at the capital city's airport, as unconfirmed media reports claimed the hijackers were carrying explosives. President Felipe Calderon was already at the airport after the hijackers, said to be three Bolivians, demanded to speak to him, the reports added. Transport Secretary Francisco Orcasitas said the plane had been "isolated from other operations" at the airport, but refused to confirm how many hijackers were on board, and who they were. Mexican online media reports said Aeromexico Flight 576 had 104 people on board when it left Bolivia before making a stopover in Cancun en route for Mexico City. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/09/09/world/main5298275.shtml Hijackers are in control of a commercial airplane on the runway at Mexico City International Airport, Mexican Communication and Transport Secretary Juan Molinar Horcasitas confirmed Wednesday afternoon. AeroMexico flight 576 Cancun landed at around 1:40 p.m. local time (2:40 p.m. EDT). The Boeing 737 was carrying 104 passengers, according to Mexican network TV Azteca. Most of the passengers have reportedly been set free, but the pilots and crew remain on board. The hijackers - identified on Mexican television as three Bolivian citizens - say they want to negotiate directly with Mexican President Felipe Calderon or they will blow up the plane, reports CBS News producer Maria Mercader. It was not immediately known what the hijackers were demanding. Freed passenger Adriana Romero said that the hijackers were well-dressed and appeared like any other passengers on board. They took control of the airplane after standing up to get their luggage out of overhead bins. The pilots spoke to passengers over the PA system and asked for them to remain calm and remain in their seats, Romero said. but it looks like the whole deal is already over and done with: http://www.myfoxdfw.com/dpp/news/international/dpg_plane_hijacked_in_mexico_lwf_090909_3408644 Fox News reports that an Aeromexico Flight 576 was hijacked by three men who took control of the plane and threatened to blow up the plane unless they spoke with Mexican President Felipe Calderon. The flight landed safely in Mexico City and five men appear to have been arrested. Local media reports that there was no explosion on the Boeing 737. Television images from Televisa showed Mexican security forces storming the plane taking many of the 104 registered passengers and the flight crew off the plane. The Associated Press reports that five men have been brought off the plane in handcuffs. Passengers told TV Azteca that they were not aware that a hijacking was taking place. One passenger said that one hijacker stood the entire flight from Cancun to Mexico City, and all of the hijackers routinely retrieved things from their carry-on bags. Mexican news media reports that the three hijackers are Bolivian citizens. Their motive is not known. |

Pro Tip: In Mexico, when planes are hijacked, the authorities actually try to get involved. In America, we don't even scramble fighter jets. |
