U.S. citizens will soon be able to log in to government websites using their Google account, or the URL of their Yahoo profile — a significant embrace of open and emerging tech standards as promised by the Obama administration.

The U.S. government pilot program will allow people to interact with various government websites using an OpenID or an Information Card, two of the most popular emerging technologies for web users to manage their identities across multiple websites, the nation’s information technology officer will announce Wednesday.

I guess I'm going back to my ISP provided email account.

Oh not so fast ASE. Microsoft has their own Live ID called Passport. I'm sure it is just a matter of time.

I don't know I haven't used them nor heard about them. What I do know is that it really matters not. The gov has been reading your emails for some time. Having this LiveID login to fed based sites is only going even further.

I'm sure a lot of you are computer savvy and understand the implications of this in a networked environment. This means, without question, your login credentials to yahoo, google, facebook, whatever, will somehow need to be verified on federally ran websites. Meaning that their websites will need to know those credentials in order to authenticate you. Now, this may just be your user ID. It may be both, I'm not sure.

Regardless, frightening.

How hard is it really to create your own login database and allow users to create their own accounts if they wanted to?

Hmm... 1,000,000 and more web forums tell me that it isn't really difficult at all.

Instead, the gov wants to use your already established online identity to allow you to look at their websites. Under the muse of "transparency".

Don't buy it.

Ironically, Wired.com (the source of the original story) also published this story today:

It's ok Happy Citizens, your Government will take care of you. Even if it means spying on you. It is all for your own good. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtian.
