On 9/11, Bush sat in a 2nd grade classroom, reading a children’s book while the attack on the WTC was in progress. He then went to another room to watch the attack on TV and to prepare a statement. Basically, the President of the US, the Commander in Chief went AWOL, but it turns out he wasn’t the only one who ignored the attack. Most of his other top officials in the WH and the DOD were AWOL too. Most of them stood around doing nothing while they watched the attack on TV. Not until the Pentagon was hit, did any of them go into action. None of them.

President George W. Bush

On December 4, 2001, Bush was asked, “How did you feel when you heard about the terrorist attack?” Bush replied, “I was sitting outside the classroom waiting to go in, and I saw an airplane hit the tower–the TV was obviously on. And I used to fly myself, and I said, well, there’s one terrible pilot. I said, it must have been a horrible accident. But I was whisked off there. I didn’t have much time to think about it.” Bush repeated the same story on January 5, 2002, stating, “First of all, when we walked into the classroom, I had seen this plane fly into the first building. There was a TV set on. And you know, I thought it was pilot error, and I was amazed that anybody could make such a terrible mistake….”

VP Richard Cheney

Cheney was in his West Wing office when he received word that a plane had struck the World Trade Center. He watched TV and hoped that his instincts were wrong.

“It was a clear day, there were no weather problems, and then we saw the second airplane hit in real time,” Cheney told CNN’s John King in an interview in the vice president’s office. “At that moment, you knew this was a deliberate act. This was a terrorist act.”

He called President Bush in Florida and spoke with top aides. Then his door burst open.

“My [Secret Service] agent all of a sudden materialized right beside me and said, ‘Sir, we have to leave now.’ He grabbed me and propelled me out of my office, down the hall, and into the underground shelter in the White House,” Cheney said.

Sec of Defense Donald Rumsfeld

Mr Rumsfeld, recalls Mr Cox, watched the TV coverage from New York and said: “Believe me, this isn’t over yet. There’s going to be another attack, and it could be us.”

Moments later, the plane hit. Mr Rumsfeld ran to the point of impact and helped load the wounded on to stretchers before retreating to the secure National Military Command Centre, beneath the building. There, he refused entreaties to evacuate even as the Centre filled with smoke.

Deputy Sec. Paul Wolfowitz

Wolfowitz: We were having a meeting in my office. Someone said a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Then we turned on the television and we started seeing the shots of the second plane hitting, and this is the way I remember it. It’s a little fuzzy.

Adm. Edmund G Giambastiani

Giambastiani and Rumsfeld both went back to their offices to work, keeping their eyes on television sets that showed the World Trade Center in flames.

AF Gen. Richard Myers

Myers said he was on Capitol Hill that morning in the offices of Georgia Sen. Max Cleland to discuss his confirmation hearing to become chairman. While in an outer office, he said, he saw a television report that a plane had hit the World Trade Center.

“They thought it was a small plane or something like that,” Myers said. So the two men went ahead with the office call.

CIA Director George Tenet

On September 11, 2001, Tenet was having breakfast at the Hay-Adams Hotel near the White House with his mentor, former Oklahoma Democratic senator David Boren. One of Tenet’s security guards brought him the news: “A plane has gone into the World Trade Center, Mr. Director.” Tenet said: “Was it an attack? It sounds like an attack.” Tenet jumped in his limousine to dash over to CIA headquarters.

FBI Director Robert Mueller

In Washington, at the F.B.I.’s J. Edgar Hoover Building, on Pennsylvania Avenue, the bureau’s newly appointed director, Robert Mueller, and his senior staff were wrapping up their daily briefing when they were notified that at eight-forty-eight a Boeing 767 with ninety-two passengers aboard—American Flight 11, bound from Boston to Los Angeles—had crashed into One World Trade Center, the north tower. All the assistant directors of the bureau were there, including the counter-terrorism chief, Dale Watson. It was still not clear that the crash was a terrorist attack. After the meeting, some of the staff moved into the office of Thomas Pickard, the deputy director, to watch the television coverage.

Solicitor General Ted Olson

Someone told me that there had been the two strikes that occurred at the World Trade Center. I turned on the television set in my office and watched, as I guess all of us did, this tragedy unfold at the World Trade Center.

Counsel to the President Alberto Gonzales

When I arrived in Norfolk, Virginia, to give a speech, the North Tower of the World Trade Center had been hit. By the end of my remarks, both the North and South Towers stood shrouded in smoke and flames with many desperate people jumping to their deaths, some 90 stories below.

NSA Advisor Condolezza Rice

Up above, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice is trying to find the rest of the President’s team. Secretary of State Colin Powell is in Peru, Attorney General John Ashcroft is in the air, and Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Joe Allbaugh is at a conference in Montana. As I was trying to find all the principals, the Secret Service came and said, you have to leave now for the bunker. The Vice President’s already there. There may be a plane headed for the White House.
