http://www.globalsecurity.org/space/facility/robins.htm http://science.howstuffworks.com/norad1.htm Today, NORAD is able to track virtually every inch of North American air space and can detect missile launches almost anywhere in the world, using satellites to spot heat signatures and exhaust plumes. In addition, NORAD tracks all man-made objects in space. All of this information is cross-referenced with civilian and military air traffic control. As a result, NORAD can quickly detect an unauthorized aircraft. Many of these turn out to be drug smugglers -- about 100 are caught each year with NORAD's help . [this information gives the lie to the idea that NORAD was overwhelmed trying to track 4, or 11, or 22 potential hijacked commercial planes. With PAVE PAWS and other integrated systems could follow 10,000 fast-moving SLBM or ICBM with decoy MIRVs at once during a nuclear attack. And yet a dozen LARGE 757s with multiple engines, going 500mph ) |
