Rape: American soldiers 'took turns'
Baghdad
August 9, 2006

DRUNKEN American soldiers took turns to rape a 14-year-old Iraqi girl, a military tribunal has heard. The men murdered her and her family and celebrated by grilling chicken wings.

The soldiers, from the 101st Airborne Division, were on checkpoint duty when they decided they "wanted to kill some Iraqis", the tribunal in Baghdad was told.

It was the first time that an account had been given publicly of what is alleged to have happened in Mahmudiya, south of Baghdad, on March 12.

Sergeant Paul Cortez, Specialist James Barker, Private Jesse Spielman and Private Bryan Howard are charged with conspiracy to rape and murder. A fifth man, Sergeant Anthony Yribe, is charged with not reporting the attack. Former private Steven Green faces rape and murder charges in a civilian court.

Special agent Benjamin Bierce recounted the sworn testimony Barker had given him.

After two hours of interrogation, Barker said the men had been playing cards and drinking.

Green is alleged to have raised the idea of killing some Iraqis. The men changed into black clothing and ski masks and told Howard to stand look-out.

The girl, Abeer Qassim Hamza al-Janabi, and her father were standing outside a house. The soldiers allegedly dragged them inside and pushed the man, his wife and younger daughter, 6, into a side room where Green stood guard over them.

Barker's statement said Cortez pushed the girl to the floor and tore off her clothes as Barker held her down. She held her knees together and struggled as Cortez tried to rape her.

A gun shot came from the side room as the men switched places. More shots were heard from the side room and Green emerged with an AK-47. He allegedly said, "They're all dead," before raping the girl and shooting her several times.

Barker said her body was set alight. Green opened the house's propane tank to set it on fire.

They burnt their clothes, threw the gun into a canal and, back at the checkpoint, brought out the chicken wings.

Although this is a horrible event, this was only 5 of the hundreds of thousands of brave troops who fight for their country, there are bad seeds in every apple. as for japan protesting, i think it's a little early for them to be bringing out the human rights books

that's right tyler. only some bad apples...

I think the main reason that we like to follow stories such as this, is not to say, "Look how evil soldiers are" (not that this is what you've accused anyone of), but rather, "Look at how these men are being trained".

People are seeing a trend of military being trained to treat humans like animals, and that's a serious problem.

peace,

peace,
I served 3 years in the infantry, and did a tour in afghanistan, and no one i knew acted in such a way at all. although some were pretty gung-ho about killing, none went out of their way to make it happen. Alot of people i know didn't join the military for any noble reason, or to help people, I for instance, just needed a job and was bored in the small town i live in.

about your comment on the training, i do think you have a very valid point there. Especially during pre-deployment training it is alot more brutal and meant to harden the soldiers for the things that are coming. On one hand you are right we were taught to show no mercy and one of the catch phrases we heard often was "Speed and Violence" our superiors wanted everything from hand-to-hand combat to tying your boots done with speed and violence. The reason for this though is to keep up disipline in the field and prevent PTSD on returning. Another reason for this is it is easier to shoot at someone who has been dehumantized instead of thinking about if he has children, a wife etc.

But over all alot of great people serve and not all of them are government puppets, (although talking about this kind of stuff is very frowned upon by most soldiers). and i'm sure if you look at factory workers you will find rapist and killers, same with office workers and all other types of jobs so lets ease up on the soldiers in general while still speaking out against the men like these that give all of us a bad name.

A big part of training people to kill other people is to dehumanize the enemy. Otherwise you have a serious problem with getting people to kill each other, because it is not a "normal" state. Once you have dehumanized the enemy, however, you always run the risk that you have gone a step too far and now you have dehumanized the enemy's wife and children as well. If you have trained your soldiers to dehumanize these people, you can't really turn around and prosecute them for murder.

The Mahmudiya Massacre

So then its OK? The Germans should have hired you as a defense attorney. It was OK because they were trained to not be in a "normal" state.
The enemy was dehumanized, and they had been trained to dehumanize the enemy's wife and children as well. So it was OK.

So these US soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division, had not really raped this little 14 year old girl and then murdered her and her six year old younger sister and her parents to cover up their crime?

They were just getting rid of 'things'? Is that how you are defending their actions? Oh yeah there was another child that they overlooked, a little boy who escaped getting 'disposed of' by hiding under his little six year old sister's bleeding body. He didn't really suffer because his Mom and Dad and sisters were just 'things'.
Is that about how you see it Grit?

Soldier’s Remarks in Iraq Slayings Case Revealed

By Brett Barrouquere
Associated Press October 22, 2008

Louisville, Ky. - A former Army soldier accused of raping and killing an Iraqi teen and slaying her family was a "chatterbox" after his arrest, voluntarily making nearly two dozen statements while in custody, prosecutors said in court documents filed Wednesday.

Pfc. Steven D. Green, 22, told FBI agents that "George Bush and Dick Cheney ought to be the ones that are arrested," according to court documents. He also said "You probably think I'm a monster" and "Guess I'm looking at spending the rest of my life in jail," the documents said.

He never specifically addressed the allegations against him.

Federal Public Defender Scott Wendelsdorf has said a judge should throw out Green's statements because he asked for an attorney.

But prosecutors said Green made the statements voluntarily and was not questioned after asking for an attorney.

"The fact of the matter is that Steven Green was a chatterbox during his transportation," prosecutors said.

Green, 22, faces 16 charges that include premeditated murder and aggravated sexual assault. He has pleaded not guilty and claims he was insane at the time of the March 2006 attack.

He was arrested a few months later at his grandmother's house in Nebo, N.C., about 80 miles northwest of Charlotte. Eventually he was brought back to Kentucky his unit was based. Green had been deployed in Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division, which is based at Fort Campbell, an Army post on the Kentucky-Tennessee border about 185 miles southwest of Louisville. His remarks to the FBI agents came as he was being taken to jail, then to court in Charlotte, N.C. after his arrest.

Four other soldiers pleaded guilty or were convicted for their roles in targeting the girl from a checkpoint near Mahmoudiya, a village 20 miles south of Baghdad, and helping rape and kill her.

Two of the soldiers testified they took turns raping the girl while Green shot and killed her mother, father and younger sister. They also testified that Green raped the girl and shot her.

Green is being prosecuted in federal court because he was discharged from the military before being charged.

A judge has scheduled a hearing for next Wednesday on whether to allow Green's statements.

Green's trial is scheduled for April.
