I served 3 years in the infantry, and did a tour in afghanistan, and no one i knew acted in such a way at all. although some were pretty gung-ho about killing, none went out of their way to make it happen. Alot of people i know didn't join the military for any noble reason, or to help people, I for instance, just needed a job and was bored in the small town i live in. about your comment on the training, i do think you have a very valid point there. Especially during pre-deployment training it is alot more brutal and meant to harden the soldiers for the things that are coming. On one hand you are right we were taught to show no mercy and one of the catch phrases we heard often was "Speed and Violence" our superiors wanted everything from hand-to-hand combat to tying your boots done with speed and violence. The reason for this though is to keep up disipline in the field and prevent PTSD on returning. Another reason for this is it is easier to shoot at someone who has been dehumantized instead of thinking about if he has children, a wife etc. But over all alot of great people serve and not all of them are government puppets, (although talking about this kind of stuff is very frowned upon by most soldiers). and i'm sure if you look at factory workers you will find rapist and killers, same with office workers and all other types of jobs so lets ease up on the soldiers in general while still speaking out against the men like these that give all of us a bad name. |
