I am 40 years old and have lived in England all my life. I recently met someone who is knowledgeable about firearms and he showed me some of his guns and explained what they were and some of the technical details.

It was the first time in my life that I ever touched an actual gun. This is not unusual because so few british people have guns it isn't usually an issue.
I was thinking about getting an air gun just to shoot cans for target practice, because that is the only type of gun that I can own without a license.

I heard about the procedure for getting a firearms license in the UK from my new friend. Not only would I have to join a registered gun club and store the gun there, I would first have to be vetted by a senior policeman, and give suitable reasons for wanting a license in the first place.

Apparently it is extremely difficult, and can take years to obtain such a license.

Since I have been enquiring, I found lots of people who have air rifles. You can have an air rifle if it is less than a certain power, but the laws are quite extreme about transporting them. And it is really hard to find any shooting ranges as they are not advertised in the usual phone book.
