I recently joined Facebook. After about only a month it has been disappointing. Contacted relatives I lost contact with and they added me as 'friend', only to have it end at that. They don't ask how things are, they don't even speak to each other. They just post shit about themselves. It's like they have blinders on and the whole thing is about them and their Narcissism. Even some of my 'friends' have over 60 photo of themselves. It's like a big 'look at me 'contest. Nobody there is even a real friend to anyone. A lot of them are so wrapped up in Facebook, that they forget people are real. I always said that the internet would have a negative effect that way. I knew it a decade ago. I have one friend, who has so many people she could talk to in real life about her problems, but she would rather announce her complete laundry list on her 'Wall". It's sad, she thinks it's normal, and I'm thinking" Oh honey, you poor girl, you're so sweet and true, why are you doing this'? I did some 'quizzes' myself when I first set up my profile. Joined like 100 "fan pages' in a one sitting. A month later I think to myself , "Ok now what...hardly anybody took my quizzes...i'm basically just wasting time". Then I TOTALLY felt like the biggest idiot...so I'm not perfect either. People online are just avatars of their true self. It's sad. I wish we could reverse it but it's too late. Between that and Twitter, nobody seems to be changing anything. Those applications are good for business and artists like me, but not for political action or 'social networking'. And you ever notice that people on the street seem more and more distant since all these chat and social sites came online? Facebook is really getting big too with new applications and things to do. It's like Second Life....without the graphics. It's all about making YOU stand out and pretending that 150 people on your friends list really give a shit if you have a stroke or jump off a bridge. NOBODY has 150 friends. And if they do, it's too many. If people online are 'friends' then people I actually speak to and hang out with in bars or clubs, once considered acquaintances, would now qualify to be Best Man at my wedding I guess. I was just thinking about this whole topic for the past few days so I'm right there on the line of thinking. |
