BELFAST - A lawyer for 31-year-old Amber Cummings entered a plea of not guilty Tuesday in Belfast District Court.
Joseph Baiungo, who was filling in for the lead attorney Eric Morse, said Cummings was not guilty and not criminally responsible because of mental disease or defect. Police say Cummings admitted to them that she shot her husband, James Cummings, at their Belfast home in December because of years of abuse, but she was not immediately charged. Investigators found materials such as uranium, literature on constructing dirty bombs, and evidence linking James to white supremacist groups in the house during their investigation. Amber Cummings was quiet during the arraignment, telling Judge Patricia Worth that she understands the charges of knowingly murdering her husband. Cummings is being held without bail in Waldo County Jail. Her attorney told us a Harnish hearing will probably take place either this Friday or next Tuesday, but it must happen within five days. Cummings and her family declined to speak with us after the arraignment.
