The port authority, fully aware of the asbestos liability , and the fact the buildings were not useful for 21st century tech (internet, cell phones) -- had already attempted to get a permit to have them demolished. The twin towers were white elephants. businesses were leaving them. they had to have massive asbestos removal and upgrades just to stay Class A office space. why would Larry Silverstein take on that liability>? -- ------------ well, I guess i would make a bad businessman - -lucky larry came out way ahead on the deal. got to walk away from the lease, option to rebuild.
