So it seems that McCain is suspending his campaign to return to Washington to work on the Wall Street bailout bill. He's also proposing a delay in Friday’s foreign policy debate until a consensus is reached. Well, the Debate Commission and Ole Miss have announced that the debate will continue as scheduled. “The debate should take place as scheduled,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in an interview with NPR to be broadcast this afternoon. “We have to be able to do a couple of things at once. That’s what leadership requires.” Hear Hear! If this guy can't chew gum and walk at the same time, he should consider himself kaput for the top job. Obama agrees. Today he told the press: “With respect to the debates, it’s my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess. And I think that it is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once." Unbelievably, McCain has now proposed that instead of having next Thursday the vice presidential debate in St. Louis, to make that the presidential debate and then to delay the VP debate to another time. This seems clear to me, as it probably does to many others, that his campaign is cringing with the thought of putting Palin up against Biden and will try almost anything to prevent that. McCain's campaign now says that if the Debate Comission does not grant his terms, he has no intention of going to the debate at all. This is likely to go over like a lead baloon. As far as McCain leaving the campaign to go to Washington, what the hell do they need him for? To see a graphic example of how much use he would be, look for the footage of what Rumsfeld was doing at the Pentagon instead of answering the phone... Edited by Tim Riches, Sep 24 2008, 07:20 PM.
