During his time in Vietnam, he was a prisoner of war who quickly collaborated with the enemy, making more than 32 tapes of propaganda for the Vietnamese. He had betrayed his country to such an extent that he was known as 'The Songbird' to the Communists. He has also been instrumental in scuttling the efforts of the families searching for their missing relatives because the documentation would expose his complicity with the enemy. Some say that the vehemence he displayed in Hanoi, threatening to destroy their trade status if they released the evidence, that he was likely a Manchurian Candidate.
