In case of thermite wouldn't it rather be an aluminium oxide deposit? Do you think these cuts could reasonably be the result of debris removal work? No Aluminium is more reactive than iron, so the oxide from the iron oxide goes to the Aluminium. Aluminium oxide is a white and powder'ish. Where as Iron is... Iron..
