Do you think countries should be able to kill people and, if so, under what circumstances? I don't. I've talked to some really weird people about this before. Well, I only found out they weird from talking to them about it. If someone backs the death penalty I instinctively don't like them but when I think about it I have a knee-jerk negative reaction to the death penalty but I accept life sentences as a matter of course, which makes me a hypocrite. If I look at it rationally there is no real difference between killing a person and taking total control of their lives away from them, other than the small possibility of their being found innocent and released. For the majority of people life in prison is no life at all. Once I get thinking about that I always think about the length of sentence people get for certain crimes, which have always confused me. I don't have specific examples and I'm not bothered getting any but I remember through the years always being surprised by how lenient the courts are on violent rapists and child abusers. I seem to remember a lot of people getting in or around ten years for probably the most disgusting act humans are capable of. Other than a couple of examples like that though, I generally just accept whatever the court's decision is without thinking about. Over the years I've thought about this and I think it's something most people do without thinking, and should probably think about more. I think if you were to rehaul the criminal justice system from the bottom up you would produce something completely different to what we have now. I mean, everyone would come up with something different so I'm not saying the current system is wrong, I just think it's interesting that most of us accept without question that different crimes have certain sentences associated with them, sentences measured in years. If you think about your own life you'll probably agree with me that for most people life boils down to 20 - 60, maybe even narrower. In my case my life didn't feel like it was my own until I finished college when I was almost 23. If people really only get twenty or thirty years to live their lives how do we decide how much of that we should take away from them? And how do you go about deciding which crimes are worse than others, and how much so? Is killing two people exactly twice as bad as killing one? Is it less or more of a crime if you killed them both at the same time or months apart? Why do we punish less when they kill people in a fit of rage? I think we accept these sentences partly out of familiarity and partly out of fear. Like earlier when I was talking about rapists and child abusers, the reason I think I'm surprised by how short their sentences are is because I feel more comfortable with them hidden away. Out of society. I don't have kids myself and to my knowledge nobody I know has ever been raped but the idea of it terrifies me and the fact that people who've been caught doing it are effectively locked in a box for a decade reassures me, but is that right? What effect do those ten years have on the person that did the crime? And would the effect be more or less the same after five years? Or even less? If you give one person twenty years and one person fourty, do you expect the second one to be even more rehabilitated? How much of it comes down to sending a message to the rest of society and how much of it is punishing them for their actions? If I'm going to talk shit like this I should really have a different suggestion but I don't. I'm as scared of being robbed or killed as anyone. I've been typing too long haha. Lots of things for you to reply to Paul. How do you feel about the death penalty and what do you think about the system we have for punishing less serious crime? |

Its very hard to say to who should live and die... but all I will say is that if any other animal hurts or kills a human they are put to death. Why are humans so special that they are the exception to the rule? Especially since we have full knowledge and control over what we do, most of the time. You cannot deny that a mass murderer with influence and even followers outside of prison, would be better off dead. Every situation requires a different judgment in my opinion. |

Someone who eats meat can't really take that position. Anyway, even I agree that an animal's life is less important than a human's. |

Humans are not far evolved from our predecessors, we act like animals most of the time anyway, when it comes to punishment,i believe the death penalty is a suitable sentence for someone who purposely takes someones life. If a wild animal kills someone today, you can be damn well sure we'll be hunting it 2moro, i dont see why it should be any different for a Thug, Criminal, whatever you wana call them. |

Gotta nuke somethin!! lol Nah its true I do eat meat but the truth is i feel guilty and I space out when I eat it. Alot of the time I stick with the veggie stuff but meat is like a fetish. Its like having withdrawal being away from it so long. Dont judge me lol.... I suppose its even worse knowing its wrong and still doing it ![]() I guess to humans, human life is the most important but if you look at the big picture why shud we be considered so important. If a superior race took over and put a human to death every time they hurt one of them it wouldnt be so nice now wud it. But if a human purposely and continuously kills people for pleasure or out of malice and was better off dead I wud be the first to suggest he'/she be put to death. If baby hitler was in front of you wud you be willing to take a life to save millions? I know i would. |
