http://www.dukechronicle.com/article/2018/02/kerry-adams-to-become-next-law-school-dean Kerry Abrams to become next Law School dean By Staff Reports | 02/02/2018 Karen “Kerry” Abrams, vice provost for faculty affairs and professor of law at the University of Virginia, has been selected as the next dean of Duke Law School, according to a Duke Today release Friday. Current dean David Levi announced last summer that he was stepping down after more than a decade in the role. Abrams, the new James B. Duke and Benjamin N. Duke Dean of the School of Law, will assume the role July 1. According to the release, Abrams is an expert in immigration law and family law. “Kerry Abrams is one of the brightest stars in legal education, and I look forward to welcoming her to Duke,” said President Vincent Price in the release. “She is a renowned scholar, a passionate advocate for students and faculty, and a deeply engaged citizen of the university who will advance Duke Law School’s already exemplary record of leadership and service to society.” Abrams received her undergraduate degree in English Literature from Swarthmore College before attending Stanford Law School. Upon graduation, she clerked for Judge Stanwood R. Duval Jr. on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana before joining the litigation department of the New York-based law firm Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler LLP. Abrams joined the UVA faculty in 2005. Accompanying Abrams in her move to Duke is her spouse Brandon Garrett, currently White Burkett Miller professor of law and public Affairs at UVA. Garrett will be a law professor at the Duke Law School, noted the release. He is an expert in criminal procedure and wrongful convictions. |

http://www.thedp.com/article/2018/02/yale-sexual-assault-whisper-networks-university-penn-upenn-philadelphia-ivy-league At Yale, students use 'whisper networks' and Google Docs to combat sexual assault on campus By Marina Gialanella 2/2/18 At Yale University, a new source of underground communication has developed for women who aim to protect themselves from men they say have engaged in sexual assault or harassment. These forms of communication include “whisper networks” and anonymous Google Docs, Business Insider reported. "There is such a large whisper network on campus, men on campus who have been flagged …It's all very much an open secret," an anonymous female student explained to Business Insider. Sororities are also getting involved, forbidding certain male students from social events. One student group, Unite Against Sexual Assault Yale, was started by Yale senior Helen Price as students felt they could not trust the university to help them against assailants. "It's well known on campus that there are certain people who are sexually aggressive, and that information is conveyed through informal channels of communication, particularly among women," Price said. These secret conversations have been an ongoing act at Yale, and students have said they feel the police department, student organizations, and university officials are failing them after numerous independent incidents involving men. RELATED: At Yale, students use 'whisper networks' and Google Docs to combat sexual assault on campus Penn has policies to investigate sexual assault off campus — but most students don't know about them According to Title IX, all schools are required to “process all complaints of sexual violence, regardless of where the conduct occurred to determine whether the conduct occurred in the context of an education program or activity or had continuing effects on campus or in an off-campus education program or activity.” A recurring issue is that a lot of schools are either not following this requirement to the fullest, or some students aren’t fully aware of the help surrounding them such as what resources are available and where to find them. A 2015 report indicated that the sexual assault rate for women at Penn is 27 percent and 5 percent for male undergraduates. In a recent Penn Professional Staff Assembly talk with Penn Provost Wendell Pritchett, Pritchett explained that the University has been constantly reassessing its own policies and thinking about how to improve. The University also revoked the honorary degrees of former Trustee Steve Wynn and Bill Crosby, which largely generated support among students on campus but still prompted questions into how Penn's bold approach will translate to campus. This year, the Interfraternity Council recently changed requirements for its Penn fraternities and their New Member Education Programs. For this spring, the fraternities can choose to send members to three out of the nine options, which include health education courses, Vagina Monologues, and the Men Against Rape and Sexual Assault Presentation. |

http://www.daytondailynews.com/news/ohio-governor-asks-for-review-campus-sexual-assault-enforcement/R9Me1Lvex1vKnBPiOdnOHP/ In light of Nassar case, Ohio governor asks for review of campus sexual assault enforcement Max Filby Staff Writer 11:44 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, 2018 News Ohio Gov. John Kasich has asked the state department of higher education to conduct a review of Title IX enforcement as it pertains to sexual assault on college campuses. The governor’s request was made in light of the Larry Nassar case at Michigan State University. Nassar has so far been accused of sexually abusing more than 265 people during his time as a doctor, treating young gymnasts. Nassar has already been sentenced to 60 years in prison on federal child pornography charges and another 40 to 175 years for state charges that he abused women while working at Michigan State. “It is second nature for the governor to look into major issues in the news to make sure Ohio has the right measures in place…He has asked staff and the department of higher education to look into what happened at Michigan State,” Jon Keeling, a spokesman for Kasich said in an email to this news organization. The state department of higher education just received the request and details on a possible review could come some time next week, said spokesman Jeff Robinson. Title IX is the a gender-equity law used to prevent discrimination at American colleges that receive federal financial assistance. There are 18 active federal Title IX investigations going on right now on Ohio college campuses. Miami University is tied with the College of Wooster for the most active probes with three ongoing, while Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati both have two active investigations. Under the governor’s watch, the state launched a program called Changing Campus Culture in 2015 with $2 million in state funding. The program charged the state department of higher education with developing the best practices for preventing and responding to campus sexual assault. Kasich’s request for a review comes just months after U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced the federal department of education would review guidelines for dealing with sexual assault. In September, DeVos said that colleges need to do a better job at balancing the rights of the accuser and the accused. |

[Nice words. But the same might have been said about Dean Sue. So the real test is, would she have acted differently than the rest of Duke's law professors had she been at Duke in 2006? Somehow I don't think so.]
See above. When he places a plaque on the front of the law school commemorating "Scottsboro II", I may start thinking he really cares about wrongful convictions... Edited by Quasimodo, Feb 3 2018, 07:23 AM.

Wonderful. We've advanced back to the stage of anonymous accusations. . . And there is nobody from the Yale Law School (apparently another winner) to explain why this is a fundamentally bad idea...? |
