I’ve been thinking about a ugly old experience in my college days this morning… that I hadn’t thought of for awhile. The coverage of the media elite and the reaction of the Democratic Left to both Sarah Palin and Cindy McCain…brought me back to the days before Rush season in my sorority …my Junior year…obviously many years ago. I LOVED my sorority but I had great friends outside of it too. …and a couple who were “independents.” One was my friend “Sue.” Sue was beautiful; she was smart; she was a leader on campus. (all things that this Sorority of mine valued highly) But she had never pledged a sorority. One afternoon, we got on the subject of sorority and she told me she would like nothing better than to be in mine. This was fabulous! I was thrilled! I could make this happen! She was perfect. She was a shoo-in. She often showed up to help with sorority projects when we needed her and worked a lot harder many times for us than some of our “sisters.” She was stunning and a presence on campus! In addition, she had two qualities that in those days were the true “keys” to any sorority kingdom: she had great “guy” connections at fraternities at other schools. And, holy-est of the holy, her family had an apartment “in the city” that she often made available to various “sisters” when night time outings ran too long. I said I would sponsor her. She said, “Don’t. They will never let me rush. I’m Jewish.” I knew she was wrong. She was perfect for us. This was a new time. We were coming out of the Age of Aquarius here. "Harmony and understanding...mystic , crystal revelations and the minds true liberation"...all that. We sang songs like "How can people be so heartless..how can people be so mean." Though we never would be seen without make-up...we all talked like we would have gone to Woodstock. She was ..come on..a little paranoid. Joan would handle everything. So-o-o…Joan put her name up and, oh yeah, “Sue” was right. They would accept her help, her favors, her companionship…but they were never going to let her rush. In an ugly debate, the more strident “sisters” threw out things like she always seemed to “have a cigarette hanging out of her mouth.” (I think the second hand smoke some of the Sisterhood put out in those days have probably cost me 10 years of my life.)…she wore a “slutty” dress to something. (with the feedback I got as Social Director from some guys who had had us to parties…I could have gone ten rounds on “slutty “with a number of them.) It was the most pathetic hypocritical manic manifestation of ignorance I had witnessed to that date. The nicer ones said...”Well she’s always around you...so she’s LIKE a sister…why do you have to push it.” My blue-eyed Waspy self wondered how dumb a blonde was I …to have missed all this? I argued and cried and stomped out…nothing mattered. They were not going to let her rush. They did not like her religion, her “beliefs.” So, no matter her talents, her gifts, the advantages she brought to the organization… they were never going to let her rush. Nor anyone like her. Period. I went home and called my REAL sister (16 years older than I) for consolation. Her husband, my favorite brother-in-law is Jewish. She told me a story of going with her husband and a group of friends years before to a private New Jersey beach. As they took out their money, the guy asked “He is a Jew? No Jews on this beach.” In no way was Mike any different from the other young people they were with, except by his looks…but they figured he believed something they didn’t believe. For THAT reason, they weren’t going to let him on the beach. That all seems so small minded and archaic and passé now. We all want to say we are part of a Big Tent. We are inclusive. Right? Right? But, look at Sarah Palin…no matter what she achieves, what she might bring to the table, the Left, the Feminists, the Media Elite do not like her beliefs...so they are not going to let her on the Beach..they are not going to let her rush. It’s tough to say you believe life begins at conception in today’s world. Smart well-degreed people sneer at you, in a way, they would never sneer at Muslims, or Buddhists or Wiccans. But if that’s what your faith and gut tells you…that’s who you are. Are we not permitted to be our genuine selves? Sarah Palin has faced some terrible choices because if her beliefs. In each instance, she chose the harder “right (to her) over the easier way out. To the Left, that's a deal breaker too. That makes her anathema to those who do not share her beliefs. That makes her dangerous. That makes her worthless. That means (snicker! Snicker!) her dumb husband should put on a condom. The scare merchants try to say this anger and enmity is okay because Sarah (and those like her) are trying to take something AWAY from them. But the intelligent and honest ones (like attorney Duke2009Parent) admit…really..that is neither true nor feasible. “Not so much really," Duke2009Parent posted, " despite my posts about it here the last couple of days. I don't even fear reversal of Roe so much because even that just throws it back to the state legislatures and most states would retain abortion rights for most situations.” Again, most people know..”nobody’s gonna steala your husband's pants.” So this is just about not wanting anyone, no matter how good or gifted that doesn’t believe YOUR way...to get invited to rush. You can’t say THAT , of course, so , like my sorority sisters of long ago…you sneer and divert and throw out other ugliness. . Cindy McCain’s clothes are too expensive and stylish...it’s obscene. Gov. Palin looks like a big haired rube...she’s an embarrassment. Obama’s thin resume makes him qualified for the Top Job...but Palin must be ridiculed to think SHE might be allowed to be Number 2. The Ayers-Obama question, if raised, must be pursued by the Justice Dept…but her child’s life is fodder for every headline. The Left can sneer, snicker, obfuscate, but to many of us out in the hinterlands that Obama so desperately needs, you are bringing back memories. Maybe it was a friend, a neighbor, or maybe...ourselves. But Sarah Palin is the girl the Elites sneered at…and would never let rush or even sit on the beach. Because her beliefs are not YOUR enlightened accepted ones...the only ones the Left tolerates or allows. We're watching, we're remembering, and I bet some of us will take those memories, those sneers, those snickers right with us into the polling booth. |

"What would Sarah Palin do if she was asked to handle, isolate and sequence DNA from a blood sample flown across the ocean from an AIDS patient who reported to a health clinic in Africa and died before they could even fill the cooler? Wet herself? Get pregnant again?" "I'm not sneering at her at all. I'm suggesting that Todd invest in a pack of condoms. Levi too. I'm sure they have them in Alaska." "Yeah - but then can't you blame China and have a claim to some sort of foreign policy experience?" "If you have a Down Syndrome baby at 44, it's time to shut down the factory, IMO." That's a lot of very personal animosity. It's mild compared to what is being said on the liberal blogs. |

I was a guest on a radio talk show yesterday and they played Bill Maher's comments about Sarah Palin. Not only does she have more children than Maher approves of, but one of them is Downs, and you can bet he and his audience was howling about that one. He referred to her Downs child, Trig, as an "it," and that was one of the nicer things he said. However, as I have posted elsewhere, people like Maher by going after Palin in the way they have will totally destroy any attempt Obama has made in trying to bring evangelicals into his campaign.

Joan this essay is one I will send to my sorority daughters as a valuable lesson the sisterhood should learn. What a great piece of writing. Why isn't in the Times, NY Post, Wa. Post? |

Despite politics, how can a decent human being make these kinds of references. The sheer meanness is overwhelming. Perhaps Michelle was right about America being a down right mean country. The people who float around in her circles are vicious. |

Anyone that would make fun of a downs syndrome child or adult on tv is a piece of trash. I can't believe that a__hole still has a show. Edited by wingedwheel, Sep 6 2008, 03:43 PM.

When I read these quotes, I remember the hateful things that were written about Collin, Reade and Dave and the kids on the Team....by strangers, by people who knew nothing of their characters, their families, the realities of their real lefe. But folks felt "entitled" to say all manner of things about them. How we all were aghast at Nancy Grace and Wendy Murphy! Remember? |

It's not my America. It's not the people that I know. If it were my friends or people I supported doing this I would have ex-friends and ex-politicians. I understand political differences, but this is cruelty and meanness. This is who they are. |

Yes, but is is about the attacker, not the target. It reveals. |
