Jeb on tiptoes, to make himself stand out (and stand taller) :

Kasich lost my vote when he went along with the Iran deal; he would watch them, hold them to it, yada yada. That's what we have right now in Washington - go along with the Left and then play it by ear.

Carly felt it was "too much trouble" (my interpretation) to change the birthright citizenship. She seems resolved on a lot of issues, but in the end - if elected - would she "cave" to pressure from the Left?

Rubio is a great speaker; Cruz sounds like Mr. Haney on Green Acres. Jeb was more likable last night.

So in the end, I think most Republicans are asking themselves which candidate is not going to cave once they get to Washington?

Christie talks tough but will he cave once he's a Washington Insider?

What would Trump's State of the Union Address sound like? "America is now great again. Thank you!"

No wonder people can't narrow it down.

CNN is saying that last night's debate was the most watched in history.

Here’s Mark Levin’s quick take on the debate last night
Quote:

1. CNN’s format was awful. The entire effort was intended to instigate fights between and among the candidates. They wanted a brawl. The early part of the debate was the worst — right out of the box, piling on Donald Trump. Like Trump or not, this is a Republican debate. As I’ve been saying for a while, when will the RNC stop turning over the GOP debates to the media? I find these debate formats demeaning of the candidates and not particularly informative.........................cont

Fiorina now becoming the RINO establishment candidate after Jeb stumbles again !

I agree with Levin. The format and questions was terrible. Where is mason and others bashing CNN and those asking the questions? Just like some did for fox and Megan kelly?

Personally I turned off the debate after listening to those stupid questions about who said what about who and what's your response. If I was standing there I would have told them it doesn't matter what any of the candidates say about me. I want the voters to know what I stand for. I would has told them I will not answer those questions. The whole thing was a sham. To much trump and not enough substance. From what I have been reading and listening to about last night I didn't miss anything. I'm glad I changed the channel.

Mark Levin is right again. The RNC is dumb as a doorknob.

1) TOO many candidates

No one under 5% should be at the next "debate." This format is for the benefit of the Cable Networks. Who appointed any of them to be our filter by choosing questions & questioners? Debates need moderators, not inquisitors

2) It isn't a debate. Again & Again I must say that it is not a debate. Anyone who has taken debating knows that.

Pardon for asking where are the Democratic Debates?

As for who won? Who cares? The purpose was to bash Trump and they succeeded to a degree. Let's see what happens in the polls.

IMHO It is pretty clear our savior isn't in the Democratic or Republican Party. A honest & ethical populace is our only hope. Instead we have zombies staring at TVs, IPhones, Internet Porn and buying needless products because they are branded better.

"What is Past is Prologue" It is still true

I took a few notes during the debate.

First, I thought the lights were too bright and I saw a few beads of sweat on the candidates early on. It was a three hour debate which was too long.

Tapper began by asking questions designed for conflict between some of the contestants, IMO, but later there were good questions. Trump looked tense at the beginning and early on had some strange facial expressions but did fine after the first few exchanges. Carly looked nervous at first, spoke perfectly and tight as a drum. Rubio started with a joke about bottled water but it was a bust.

Rand Paul was articulate and I liked his talk about limiting war -- should be a last resort instead of first resort -- and Saudi funding of bad guys and his knowledge of the 14th amendment (anchor baby discussion).

Bush gave an excellent answer to what pretend Secret Service code word he would have which was "Ever-ready" and Trump really liked that answer. Trump extended his hand to Bush who slapped it in a friendly way. Trump's code word was "Humble". Both displayed self-deprecating humor which went over well.

I thought the most surprising exchange was about vaccines. Tapper pointed out that Trump had questions about vaccines. He got support for his position from doctors Rand Paul and Ben Carson. For this, Trump was most grateful and took the hand of Carson, who was right next to him, and shook it.

Another interesting exchange was Trump saying that he was the only one who did not agree with going into Iraq. This set up a whole exhange about the Iraq war. Rand Paul and Ben Carson said they did not agree with the invasion of Iraq in 2003 either. Others said that the problem was with the US not staying in Iraq and therefore there was a void filled by ISIS, etc. No one asked about the biillions or trillions spent on the Iraq invasion and aftermath which I believe was off budget. Might have been a good point with Christie discussing cutting back on Social Security.

At the end, Trump said he felt honored to be part of the debate and gave kind words to the candidates. I think the debate ended on a high note. He shook the hand of Carly Fiorina who seemed relaxed. I think all the candidates did well.

Rubio made some good points but he and Kasich tended to be long winded.

Trump is well versed in business, taxes, and the economy. Rand Paul and Carson helped Trump articulate the 14th amendment and vaccine schedules, respectively. Carson advised George Bush not to go into Afganistan after 9-11, something about oil which I did not understand, but intriguing.

Trump is very honest and authentic and demonstative (lots of body language). Charming, actually.

I saw only a few minutes of the CNN commentary after the debate.

*********************************************

I saw part of the first debate. Lindsey Graham was energized and gave some good one liners but at the end of the day, was pro-war. Some pundit at the end of the first debate said Graham espoused what the Republican establishment wanted to be by this time, i.e. funding Planned Parenthood.

Jindal, Santorum were good. Actually some of there ideas have some merit. Pataki was much more moderate than conservative.

Having only 4 in this debate meant more time could be taken for various issues.

Thanks foxglove for that insightful synopsis :) :toast:

Interesting the discussion in the faculty lounge this afternoon. One teacher, from Ireland, said that she would leave this country including her husband and family if Trump is elected as she thinks he is another Hitler. When I asked her why she felt he was another Hitler she got flustered - said he is a bully and a narcissist and that he is stupid. I asked her where she got that information - NPR was her answer. Of course, said teacher constantly criticizes this country though she believes Obama is a wonderful person who is misunderstood. - I wanted to say "do not let the door hit you as you leave" but restrained myself.

Of course, I work with people who rarely if ever read a newspaper and who get all their information from NPR. They find it impossible to believe that I find it imperative to read across the political spectrum - saying it takes too long and that there is not enough time in the day.......however, I ask them how can they test what they are told if they do not seek information across the board so that one can evaluate what one hers, sees , and reads. Of course, no one is able to answer that question.

I think that Trump has a good shot to get the nomination - despite the Rhino and media effort to derail his candidacy. As to the question - ho good will he be? - well, who knows......but I do believe that he will be a darn sight better than the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

I'm more limited on time lately, but am hoping to read the entire transcript and the result would most likely include comments!

I'm losing interest, too. One good thing about CNN's having the debate is that hopefully a few liberals got to hear some conservative viewpoints.

CNN is going after Trump (Anderson Cooper, David Gergen and some other pundit). They played a clip of Trump doing a Town Hall Meeting in NH and someone in the audience asked what Trump was going to do about the muslim training camps here. Trump said he was going to look into it, but the CNN crew now is trying to show that Trump is anti-muslim. Gergen: "You can't win the Presidency without the Latino and muslim vote."

this isn't rocket science

the media and DC and and most of the institutions simply want to select someone that they can defeat in the general election.

this is about positioning to get that candidate that will be defeated.

Thank you for your kind comments, MikeZPU.

I am waiting to see if CNN who will have the Democrat debate in October will have the Dem candidates stand for 3 hours. The Dem debate should have the same format as the Republicans.

I agree with Mark Levin that there was a build-up for Fiorina starting with CNN changing the rules of the debate to allow Fiorina onto the main stage. Then Hugh Hewitt asking Trump the questions about the leader of the Quds Force and other foreign policy questions. Trump pointed out in the CNN debate that HH admitted to essentially making Trump look bad in the interview and HH smiled and nodded his head in agreement.

When I think of Fiorina, I think of McCain and Rommey whom she worked for. Both McCain and Rommey refused to fight Obama the way they should have and both were too conscious of the dictates of the media, IMO. Is Fiorina too connected to the establishment and media?

At the end of the day, the voter has to decide who is for the country and the American people and who has the energy and desire to fight for American ideals.
