Extreme secrecy eroding support for Obama's trade pact

Classified briefings and bill-readings in basement rooms are making members queasy.

If you want to hear the details of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal the Obama administration is hoping to pass, you’ve got to be a member of Congress, and you’ve got to go to classified briefings and leave your staff and cellphone at the door.

If you’re a member who wants to read the text, you’ve got to go to a room in the basement of the Capitol Visitor Center and be handed it one section at a time, watched over as you read, and forced to hand over any notes you make before leaving.

And no matter what, you can’t discuss the details of what you’ve read.

“It’s like being in kindergarten,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), who’s become the leader of the opposition to President Barack Obama’s trade agenda. “You give back the toys at the end.”

For those out to sink Obama’s free trade push, highlighting the lack of public information is becoming central to their opposition strategy: The White House isn’t even telling Congress what it’s asking for, they say, or what it’s already promised foreign governments....snipped

Of course what does the Obama Administration say?

"..Officials from the White House and the United States trade representative’s office say they’ve gone farther than ever before to provide Congress the information it needs and that the transparency complaints are just the latest excuse for people who were never going to vote for a new trade deal anyway...."

We should be very worried about what Obama will do in the last 626 days of his administration

The request for fast-track also comes at a time when the Administration has established a recurring pattern of sidestepping the law, the Congress, and the Constitution in order to repeal sovereign protections for U.S. workers in deference to favored financial and political allies.”

The Sessions document then goes point-by-point for five full pages through the TPA trade deal, laying out why it wouldn’t help Americans—rather, it would likely hurt American workers—and why the deal doesn’t in fact provide Congress with more power over trade despite talking points from the Obama trade deal’s proponents like House Ways and Means Committee chairman
Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and House Speaker
Rep. John Boehner (R-OH).

The first point lays out how the deal would result in a “consolidation of power in the executive branch,” a point in which Sessions takes to task those like Ryan who have argued that the deal would return more power to Congress.

... “Job loss by U.S. workers means reduced consumer demand, less tax revenue flowing into the Treasury, and greater reliance on government assistance programs. It is important that Congress fully understand the impact of this very large trade agreement and to use caution to ensure the interests of the people are protected,” Sessions wrote. “Furthermore, the lack of protections in TPA against foreign subsidies could accelerate our shrinking domestic manufacturing base. We have been getting out-negotiated by our mercantilist trading partners for years, failing to aggressively advance legitimate U.S. interests, but the proponents of TPA have apparently not sought to rectify this problem. TPA proponents must answer this simple question: will your plan shrink the trade deficit or will it grow it even wider?”

The third major point of Sessions’ “critical alert” document lays out how passing TPA, and then TPP, means the United States is effectively “ceding sovereign authority to to international powers.”

My immediate response is who is going to grease Obama, Paul Ryan , Mitch McConnell , & John Boehner palms?

A cushy retirement from the Trans Pacific Partners & a big reward from the US Chamber of Commerce.

Both sides are selling us out.

Obama trade bill revived after bipartisan deal sets new votes

The trade deal was back on track Wednesday afternoon, just a day after hitting the skids in a Democratic filibuster, after leaders struck a bipartisan agreement to move forward.

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/05/20/sen-sessions-myth-busts-obama-trade-effort/

With the Senate poised to vote to end debate on Obama’s fast-track trade legislation,
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL)...

took on arguments for the trade deal with a series of what he office says are “myths” versus “truths” about the trade deal under consideration in Congress.

In the myth buster account, Sessions’ office says not only will fast-track erode congressional power over the trade process but the trade agreements implemented under that authority will trump U.S. law.

http://thehill.com/policy/finance/243932-boehner-we-dont-have-votes-yet-on-trade

Later Wednesday, Boehner and his entire leadership team hosted a 20-minute pep rally in the basement of the Capitol with more than 200 pro-trade allies, including representatives from trade associations, the agriculture and shipping industries, and manufacturers.

“Let’s get it done!” the Speaker told attendees.

Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) emceed the meeting. And both Scalise and Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) asked attendees to contact local and national business leaders and have them urge House lawmakers to back the bill, attendees said.

“It was mainly an effort to get this piece of legislation across the finish line,” said one attendee. “They wanted to underscore the importance of passing TPA.”

In an interview with The Hill, House GOP Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) said the pro-trade gathering was part of “the push to the finish.”

The American people can look to NAFTA to see how the TPP will turn out.

Maybe this is why Boehner cries so much especially around children. He knows there futures will be limited by things like TPP?

http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2013/12/weeper-of-the-house-john-boehner-cries-100557.html

Gail Collins of the New York Times was among the first to write about Boehner’s crying. She noted that Boehner was all verklempt during a 60 Minutes interview with Lesley Stahl when the subject of children came up. Boehner, one of 12 kids himself and father to two daughters, told Stahl he can no longer visit schools, or even look at the little kids on the playground, because he immediately starts crying. Boehner’s tears-for-tots do not speak to some deep trauma or catastrophe involving a child. Nope. The reason Boehner cannot visit schools without coming apart at the emotional seams was, as he choked out, “making sure these kids have a shot at the American dream, like I did, is important.”

Boehner’s life story is, indeed, a version of the American dream—he grew up waiting tables and tending bar at the family’s tavern in Ohio and paid his way through Xavier University by working as a night janitor. As he himself said, he got to the top “working every rotten job there was.”

But the “I did it!” joy is missing. With Boehner, we get the opposite: rather than shouts of triumph for prevailing against the odds, howls of pain and angst.

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2015/06/04/exclusive-carly-to-obama-devil-is-in-the-details-release-obamatrade-text-now/

"Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO and 2016 Republican presidential candidate, is calling on President Barack Obama to publicly release the text of Obamatrade immediately.

“Of course, I support free and fair trade,” Fiorina said in an email to Breitbart News.

But President Obama has made lofty promises before and we’ve learned with this White House that the devil is in the details. And the details are frequently very different than the lofty goals with which he describes the deal. So I’d like President Obama to tell us what’s in his trade deal before we grant him this broad fast track authority. So far, though, he’s been unwilling to do that and Hillary won’t even take a position on it. That should concern us. Mr. President, if you want TPA to pass, please just tell us what is in TPP.

Fiorina’s call for transparency on the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) Pacific Rim trade deal comes right after the U.S. Senate passed Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) to fast track that deal—and right before the House is angling to take up the deal.

It also comes on the heels of revelations that several lieutenants of House Speaker
Rep. John Boehner (R-OH)—who supports the deal and is using his allies like Majority Whip
Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rules Committee chairman Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), the two specific lieutenants in question—haven’t read the text of TPP, which TPA would ensure the passage of.

Fiorina’s 2016 competition also has some issues on this matter.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), both of whom voted for Obamatrade in the Senate, are refusing to answer whether they read the TPP text before voting for this. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), who voted for it, read the TPP text before doing so and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) is the only Republican running for president in Congress currently who voted against Obamatrade.

Paul went to the secret room to read the bill—which only members of Congress and certain cleared staffers with high-level security clearances are allowed to do—and when he came out he told Breitbart News he doesn’t think there’s anything in there that can’t be made public before Congress votes on TPA.

Most of the 2016 presidential field stands with Fiorina and Paul against Obamatrade. Dr. Ben Carson, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and real estate mogul Donald Trump have each come out against the deal very publicly as well.

Fiorina, in an interview with Breitbart News at the South Carolina Freedom Summit last month, compared Obamatrade to Obamacare—noting that the secretive process is extraordinarily troubling.

Free trade is a good thing and I would love to be able to support this thing, but unfortunately we don’t know what’s in it—and that’s the problem. We’ve seen too many deals in this administration where they sound like a good thing—remember Obamacare? The goal sounded great and then it turned out the details were something very different. And so, I think we need to see the details. It’s hard for me to understand why the president—who’s pitching this deal so hard—won’t just give us some understanding of what’s in it. For example, one of the purposes of this deal was to solidify our leadership in a region so that we could push back a little against a newly assertive China. Now we’re hearing that maybe China could join this deal in a couple years. Is that true? Is it not? I don’t know. We need to know those kinds of details, which are pretty important.

What’s interesting here is that just this week, President Obama confirmed that China has been angling to get into the deal—a concern Fiorina raised weeks ago."

(Bold emphasis is mine).

Obama admits that climate change will be in Obamatrade

In a speech on the Senate floor on May 22, Democratic senator Ron Wyden of Oregon ridiculed those who thought climate change regulation would be part of Obamatrade:

We’ve heard suggested, for example, that it’s a backdoor route to immigration reform or action on climate change…. My sense is that the rate these hypotheticals are going, you’re bound to hear that a future president working on a trade deal might have second thoughts about the Louisiana purchase.

But in an interview on NPR’s Marketplace yesterday (June 3), President Obama said that enforcing climate change regulations will indeed be part of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the Obamatrade pact that he is currently negotiating with Malaysia and 10 other countries. He said:

"If we want to solve something like climate change, which is one of my highest priorities, then I’ve got to be able to get into places like Malaysia, and say to them, this is in your interest. What leverage do I have to get them to stop deforestation? Well part of the leverage is if I’m in a trade relationship with them that allows me to raise standards"....snipped

Exclusive–Sessions to Obama: Why Are You Keeping Obamatrade’s New Global Governance Secret?

“In other words, through fast-track, Congress would be pre-clearing a political and economic union before a word of that arrangement has been made available to a single private citizen.”

The letter hones in on the new global governance, as Sessions calls it, that would be created by the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP)—which would almost certainly be approved by Congress should the House of Representatives vote in favor of Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) to fast track TPP and other trade deals. TPA, which passed the Senate a couple weeks ago, would ensure—barring some unforeseen development—the congressional approval of TPP, and collectively the two have become known as Obamatrade.

“The letter, which received no reply, asked several fundamental questions Congress ought to have answered before even considering whether to grant the executive such broad new powers,” Sessions wrote to Obama on Friday referencing his previous letter. “Among those, I asked that you make public the section of the TPP that creates a new transnational governance structure known as the Trans-Pacific Partnership Commission. The details of this new governance commission are extremely broad and have the earmarks of a nascent European Union, with many similarities.

“Reviewing the secret text, plus the secret guidance document that accompanies it, reveals that this new transnational commission – chartered with a ‘Living Agreement’ clause – would have the authority to amend the agreement after its adoption, to add new members, and to issue regulations impacting labor, immigration, environmental, and commercial policy.
