Hud Mellencamp — best known as the 19 year-old son of the famed rockstar John Mellencamp — has left the summer-time practice field used by Duke football and returned home to Indiana to face serious felony charges.
Mellencamp — a sophomore cornerback walk-on who has never played a minute — allegedly was with his 18-year-old brother Speck and Ty Smith, a walk-on wide receiver at Indiana, when the trio allegedly pummeled and kicked a 19 year-old man. He suffered facial fractures and other serious injuries.
The assault took place on the front porch of a home where all four had attended a party.
Duke head coach David Cutcliffe issued a statement regarding the warrant for Mellencamp’s arrest.
“We are aware of the charges that Hud Mellencamp faces in Indiana. Currently, we are giving him the opportunity to return to Indiana to address his legal issues,. We will refrain from any further comment until more information becomes available.”
There has been no statement from the University regarding Mellencamp’s status as a student.
Mellencamp — a championship boxer in high school — did not play football before college.

No, "What he did was bad enough"?
No firing of the coach for not keeping his students in line during off-campus parties?
No open letter from the faculty?
No editorials decrying athletic privilege?
No Deans suggesting he not contact an attorney?
Is there a presumption of possible innocence here?
