http://www.examiner.com/article/danowski-tripucka-power-hounds-into-mll-playoffs Danowski, Tripucka power Hounds into MLL playoffs August 5, 2013 By: Peter Koutroumpis Former Duke Blue Devils men’s lacrosse standouts Matt Danowksi and Jake Tripucka combined for nine goals and earned Major League Lacrosse’s (MLL) Charlotte Hounds a 14-11 victory over the Hamilton Nationals in front of 4,317 fans at American Legion Memorial Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday. The Blue Devils’ current assistant coach, Danowski was named Player of the Game (POG) as his seven-point performance (6g, 1a), helped to earn the team a spot in the upcoming MLL championship weekend (Aug. 24-25) that will take place in Philadelphia, Pa. After falling behind 5-1 early, the Hounds responded with Danowski tallying four goals, including a two-pointer, that was coupled with rookie Tripucka’s first of the game that tied the score 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. Danowski added two more goals in the next quarter to keep Charlotte even with Hamilton, as both teams went into the halftime break tied 9-9. The Hounds outscored the Nationals 5-2 for the remainder of the game as Danowski scored his final goal late in the third quarter while Tripucka followed his former coach’s lead, tallying two more goals to secure the Hound’s trip into postseason play. Goalkeeper Adam Ghitelman recorded 13 saves on 21 shots faced, while Geoff Snider and Tim Fallon combined to go 13-25 at the faceoff X for the Hounds, who won their third straight game and set a new team record in doing so. Charlotte will finish its regular-season schedule on the road on Saturday against the third-place Chesapeake Bayhawks (8-5), and will face a squad that is coming off a 12-8 win over the Rochester Rattlers. The Hounds will not only seek to keep their streak going with a win over the Bayhawks, but if successful, will earn the third overall seed in the upcoming MLL playoffs. |
