Whom does Affirmative Action benefit? Apparently not African-Americans, for whom it was designed; in fact, their scores seem to be getting worse, not better; whereas Asian-Americans, who are sometimes discriminated against (and legally, btw); and whose parents sometimes have them change their names to be Anglo-sounding, so that they won't be discriminated against in college applications (so that the admissions officers won't know that they are Asian) excel. (Anybody want to put in a word for the value of a home-centered/family-centered culture, which expects its children to work hard and succeed? And which is not given any excuses by the society around them--nor benefits--for failing?) |
