Obama launches bold/doomed/cynical/hopeful outreach to Congress
By Olivier Knox, Yahoo! News | The Ticket – 1 hr 6 mins ago

President Barack Obama heads to Capitol Hill on Tuesday for the first of three days of closed-door meetings with wary lawmakers. Obama will take questions from Senate Democrats, who might well ask him variations on, “Why are you really here?”

Officially, Obama is trying to build support for key planks of his second-term agenda—such as overhauling immigration policy and battling gun violence—and gauging whether he can chip away at Republican opposition to his plan for reining in long-term deficits and the swelling national debt.

The outreach, which inside-the-Beltway tradition seemingly requires reporters to dub a “charm offensive,” comes after the president treated Republican senators to dinner at a swank D.C. hotel last week, and hosted the top House Republican and Democratic budget-writers at the White House. Through it all, he’s also been working the phones, calling lawmakers from both parties and both chambers.

White House aides say they've been encouraged by the response thus far; some Republicans learned from the president himself that he favors some cuts to entitlement programs as part of a "grand bargain" to stem the tide of red ink, and seem ready to give his ideas a second look. And they note that meetings on neutral turf—or in Congress—can make the exchange of ideas more free-flowing than it might be in the presidential mansion, surrounded by the trappings of Obama's power.

But it wasn’t that long ago that Obama himself dismissed calls for that kind of personal outreach as a silly belief he could “Jedi mind meld” a deal with the GOP. And that skepticism can apparently be found among White House aides as well.

“This is a joke. We’re wasting the president’s time and ours,” a senior aide told National Journal veteran reporter Ron Fournier on condition of anonymity. “I hope you all (in the media) are happy because we’re doing it for you.”

One needs to question WTH they spend our tax dollars on at times.

I have a couple liberal friends who have been moaning about the reduction in Research and Development grants (NIH) since 2010, which actually had an increase in budget for 2011 & 12 over the previous years (before that extra one-time play money added in from Stimulus). It appears they may finally be getting hit with a tighter pocket.

One also mentioned the price of gas and went on telling how we need more R&D money from the oil companies (Daddy Warbucks to him!). I was baffled! He mentioned the high gas price AND also wants to increase the cost of production for the oil/gas companies ...who does he think will pay for it????

I didn't have the heart to tell him that Barry is working to keep more of the little guy's energy money spent in other countries to import oil into our country. I figured I then also have to explain how the dollar turns over if it is spent here. Maybe I should have pointed out his state pension plan PROBABLY owns stock in the big oil companies!

That's not very encouraging.

Sun Still Rises After Sequester So Prez Comes Up With Plan B To Insure Hardship

And Kimberly Strassel, in another Journal column, has put together another list detailing how this government wastes billions of our tax dollars. Did you know that the White House employs three calligraphers? Did you know they make a total of $277,000 a year? How about this: The Environmental Protection agency gave away $141,000 – fasten your seat belt! — to fund a Chinese study on swine manure. And the National Science Foundation shelled out $325,000 to build – wait for it — a robotic squirrel.

Ms. Strassel writes that, “The government gave a $3700 grant to build a miniature street in West Virginia – out of Legos. It shelled out $500,000 to support specialty shampoo products for cats and dogs.”

We may not have enough money to let little kids from around the country tour the White House, but we have $27 million to fund – ready for this? – pottery classes … in Morocco!

College tuition stipends for US airmen suspended
Posted: 14 minutes ago

RALEIGH, N.C. — The U.S. Air Force has joined other military branches in suspending tuition assistance that thousands of active-duty airmen rely on to pay for college classes.

Air Force spokeswoman Lt. Col. Laurel Tingley said airmen were notified in an email Tuesday that new applications for tuition assistance won't be accepted because of the $85 billion in federal spending cuts that went into effect March 1.

The U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard suspended their assistance programs last week. A decision by the U.S. Navy is pending.

The tuition assistance programs pay up to $250 per semester hour for active duty personnel, up to $4,500 per year. Military personnel may still qualify for aid under the G.I. Bill, which is not affected.
