On Tuesday, the board passed a revised strategic plan that says that by 2018, it wants 90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of black students to be reading at or above grade level. For math, the goals are 92 percent of Asian kids to be proficient, whites at 86 percent, Hispanics at 80 percent and blacks at 74 percent. It also measures by other groupings, such as poverty and disabilities, reported the Palm Beach Post. http://tampa.cbslocal.com/2012/10/12/florida-passes-plan-for-racially-based-academic-goals/ |

I believe it is the average success rate in many school systems across this great country. They are shooting for being just average. Edited by chatham, Oct 14 2012, 09:57 PM.

I dunno... It seems politically incorrect, it recognizes certain realities of life (real or imaginary), and it does not attack or demean any individuals. It might be offensive to certain groups - but who cares! Rights are for individuals, not for groups! Is there such a thing as "racial pornography"?

. The Auditing and Accreditation already penalizes schools for each suspension of an African-American student, irrespective of the reason, deservedness, or incident. And these auditing / accreditation firms are in bed with the Dept of Education - which has turned into a big diversity tank itself. . |

I recall reading that and it was a policy of a specific state (can't recall which one). Is it now a part of the federal policies at the US Dept. of Education? |

The rally cry in my state is always to "Close the Achievement Gap". The achievement gap is that certain groups like blacks and Hispanics are behind in test scores those of whites and Asians. The group becomes more important than the individual in this approach. I think this approach provides an exuse to spend a lot of money under the guise that it takes a lot of money to close the achievement gap. Need to build new magnet schools? Well, it is necessary in order to close the achievement gap. Need computers for all the kids in the classrooms? Well, it is necessary in order to close the achievement gap. A more beneficial slogan would be to "Go Back to Basics", IMO. To target the Achievement Gap, I think it would be necessary to target the social ills such as the breakdown of the family and the effect of TV watching over the decades. Which seems to take us directly to what the solutions in place for the "Achievement Gap(s)" in life has given those needing help ...less FAMILY ...and Barry has tweaked the law to make WORK less of an obstacle in spreading the solution. Sometimes I trully wonder if it is some secret plan to destroy those they act like they are helping. Edited by kbp, Oct 15 2012, 09:28 AM.

. The U.S Dept of Education has a Civil Rights division. This Civil Rights division has the ability to open federal cases and federal investigations. The U.S. Dept of Education has supported the accrediting agencies threatening districts over removal of their accreditation for any changes that place less emphasis or less importance on diversity. One of N.C.'s largest districts stated that with a money crunch they were going to make Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic priority. Education was going to be the Priority - other objectives would be secondary. With that (and the election of some Republicans) - the accrediting agency threatened to withdraw accreditation and the U.S. Dept of Education opened a Federal Investigation of the school district, costing them money (and time) to comply. They essentially ran out the clock and the latest board has recently become Democrat again with the DEMS claiming the school district ran the risk of losing accreditiation and the prospect of paying millions of dollars to comply with a Federal Investigation. This arose out of a District stating that Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic and improving student achievement would be their focus. That should tell you something. . |

They can strategic plan all they like, it's not going to improve public education. Unions will not allow the necessary changes to make it happen. Goals amount to setting low expectations, celebrating mediocrity, watering down the curriculum, and higher pay and benefits for the adults. Just plain awful . . . for everyone. |

It's a complete cycle. Lowered expectations at home. Lowered expectations at school. Lowered expectations at college. Lowered expectations at hiring time. Should expectations ever be high, file a lawsuit. |
