Anyone is a winning candidate against McCaskill as long as they don't bring up legitimate rape.

Akin: I’m still in

Rep. Todd Akin said again Friday he won't bow out of the Missouri Senate race against incumbent Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill.

In a hastily called news conference near St. Louis, the embattled congressman repeated his decision to remain a candidate despite repeated calls to withdraw.

"Apparently there are some people having trouble understanding our message," he said. "We're going to be here until the November elections."

Akin has raised an estimated $200,000 over the last three days as a result of appeals to supporters, but the latest poll shows Akin trailing McCaskill by 10 points in the race....snipped

Todd Akin reaffirms he's staying in the Senate race

We have supported Akin. He has done a good job for our district in Congress. We voted for him in the primary. We have accepted his apology, but we are extremely disappointed that he seems to be putting his personal ego before the needs of the party, the state and the country. By staying in the race he is assuring that McCaskill will retain her Senate seat. That is a travesty in itself, but he may also be assuring that Obama will get Missouri's electoral votes. This is not only a travesty but a major disaster in our opinion. We have urged him to reconsider and to do the right thing for the party, Missouri and the Country.

“Republican” In Obama Ad Is A Democrat

...."People like me and my family have realized that the Republican Party once was inline with our views, but are no longer," the Colorado resident says in the video.

The video is one component of a larger Obama campaign push on women in light of the recent controversy surrounding Todd Akin.

What can the Missouri GOP do?

The noose is tightening around Todd Akin’s campaign. The National Republican Senatorial Committee has turned up the heat with with another statement, which read, in part: “It should not be lost on anyone that some of the only voices not calling for Congressman Akin to do the right thing and step aside are Claire McCaskill and the leaders of the pro-abortion movement. Senator McCaskill knows that the only way she wins re-election is if Todd Akin is her opponent in November. We continue to hope that Congressman Akin will do the right thing for the values he holds dear, but there should be no mistake — if he continues with this misguided campaign, it will be without the support and resources of the NRSC.”

The mega-third party fundraising operation American Crossroads let it be known Akin isn’t getting any money from it either. (“Rep. Akin faces a simple choice: Will he help Democrats hold the McCaskill seat and potentially the Senate majority by staying in the race, or will he help Republicans defeat Barack Obama’s most reliable ally in the Senate by getting out?”)

And in case Akin thought this was an inside the Beltway phenomenon, Rush Limbaugh joined the chorus telling Akin to get out.

Akin can, as I mentioned, drag this out through September 25. But there are other steps the GOP and third-party groups might take to hasten his departure.

For starters, following in the tradition of Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) the GOP could field an “independent,” like a former senator, and back him or her to the hilt. One Right Turn reader suggested former Sen. John Danforth, who would actually draw some votes from Democrats as well.

Either the state GOP or third-party groups in Missouri could actually run ads or a petition from voters asking him to step down for the good of the party....snipped

So the Missouri GOP still has time, but Akin is keeping this alive. Personally I think he is a dead man walking from now on out in the GOP unless he pulls off a miracle and wins. Then of course all is forgiven.

In the meanwhile it was rumored that Republican consultants, ad agencies, etc have been told that if they do anything with Akin it is over for them also.

Our good friends at Huffington Post have this story out today, that
Ryan stated in an interview that rape is just another form of conception.

The story doesn't seem to be picking up any steam in the mainstream media.

Nice try Huffington Post.

It's an inaccurate re-write totally out of context. No wonder nobody will touch it.

Well I guess it ain't over until the voters vote.

Poll: Akin-McCaskill race still a tossup

Despite widespread assertions that Missouri Republican Rep. W. Todd Akin's abortion remarks have made him a heavy underdog in the state's U.S. Senate race, a Democratic-leaning polling firm released a poll Thursday showing him in a virtual dead heat with incumbent Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

According to the survey by Public Policy Polling, Mrs. McCaskill has support from 45 percent of likely Missouri voters compared with 44 percent for Mr. Akin, a result that differs strongly from polls conducted last week by other firms.

Mr. Akin has been widely condemned by Democrats and Republicans since he made comments in an Aug. 19 television interview, in which he tried to explain his opposition to abortion for rape victims by saying that pregnancy is rare in cases of "legitimate rape."

Most notable Republicans have called on him to step down as the party's Senate nominee, and party leaders have vowed to withhold millions in contributions from his campaign if he does not comply. He has until Sept. 25 to exit the race and allow the state GOP to select a replacement, if he so chooses.

Mr. Akin was a decided favorite in the race before his comments aired, but he has since been painted by Republicans and some polls as virtually unelectable.

A poll last week by Rasmussen Reports showed him trailing Mrs. McCaskill by 10 points, while a St. Louis Post-Dispatch poll released last week showed him trailing by 9 points.

On the contrary, Thursday's PPP poll found that 53 percent of Missouri voters — including 77 percent of Republicans — have accepted Mr. Akin's apology for his comments, and that 54 percent think he should stay in the race, while just 37 percent think he should drop out...snipped

....The firm released a poll last week that showed Mr. Akin with a 1-point lead, inciting harsh criticism from Republicans, who called it a deliberate attempt by the left-leaning firm to keep Mr. Akin in the race rather than a scandal-free, and presumably stronger, candidate.

Maybe McCaskill is just that bad?

Or maybe it s a false poll aimed at keeping Akin?

I would not trust a PPP poll. They want akins to run and will make their poll close. Other polls don't show the same results.

I saw a broadcast of a recent Missouri Senate debate last night on C-Span. McCaskill definitely was on the attack which indicates to me that Akin is probably doing pretty well, poll-wise. The wild card in the race was a libertarian candidate that was given a spot at the debate. This should be an interesting race.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/49145425

"Written off by many in his own party a mere month ago, Republican Rep. Todd Akin has been slowly rebuilding his Senate campaign after apologizing for inflammatory remarks about pregnancy and rape.

Now Akin is approaching a critical week that could determine whether his re-emerging campaign can gain enough momentum to put Missouri back in the battleground column as Republicans attempt to win control of the Senate from Democrats.

Tuesday is the deadline for Akin to get a court order to drop his challenge of Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. But Akin says he won't do so. Instead, Akin plans to ramp up his campaign. He's holding a fundraiser Monday with former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich. He's addressing a potentially influential group of pastors Tuesday morning. Then as the drop-out clock ticks down, he's kicking off a statewide bus tour for his Senate bid that will include venerable conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly.

"I believe the state of the campaign is looking better and better," Akin said Friday after engaging McCaskill in their first debate and then rallying on the Missouri Capitol lawn with supporters of a newly formed women-for-Akin coalition.

Akin has apologized repeatedly since a TV interview aired Aug. 19 in which he suggested that women's bodies have a natural defense against pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." He has repeatedly rejected calls of top national Republicans — including presidential candidate Mitt Romney — to quit the race so the state GOP committee can appoint a replacement candidate. Yet some have doubted Akin's resolve.

"There are a lot of donors who have sat on the sidelines and are waiting" for Tuesday's drop-out deadline to pass, said Rick Tyler, a former Gingrich aide who joined Akin's campaign as part of the re-building effort. "We are tilling that hard soil now — that is, reaching out to people who could potentially give significant amounts of dollars."

Come Tuesday, "those donors are going to see that Todd's going to be on the ballot," Tyler adds.

Whether that triggers an avalanche of money for Akin remains one of the most important questions facing his campaign..."

DeMint might throw Akin a lifeline

Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) says he will consider throwing his weighty financial support behind Rep. Todd Akin (R), the Missouri Senate candidate who has been shunned by party leaders in Washington.
DeMint said the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), which has pulled its funding from the Missouri race, should reconsider its decision if Akin continues his candidacy.....

They have to be careful. Akin's error makes him appear as one who might argue rape is a victimless crime ....changing the topic on a national level.
