I thought some might be interested, Outside Magazine has an article the Mendocino County area of California.

A beautiful place, that, according to the article, supplies (grows) more Marijuana than 35 states.

There are signs in the National Forest telling Hikers to get out quickly if they see some of the warning signs (such as a certain kind of beer the immigrant growers drink).

I think we need wilderness, need near-pristine places to go. Creating this type of dangerous or violent environment in these areas, should not be allowed in my mind.

If they know it is not safe for the public there, why do they not just raid it?

Mendocino County is indeed beautiful. It has also become home to illegal Marijuana growing in the forest.

Unfortunately the economy collapsed in the 90's due to less lumber industry business which was due to lobbying by activist restricting harvesting.

LUMBER NO LONGER NO. 1 IN MENDOCINO COUNTY - 2003

....Art Harwood, whose Branscomb family operates Mendocino County's last independently owned sawmill, predicted California consumers ultimately will be the ones to pay for increased environmental protections.

``Locally, private timberland landowners are finding that the costs of preparing and winning regulatory approval for timber harvesting in many cases nearly equal prices the logs will bring in the marketplace,'' said Harwood.

As a result, Harwood said he is buying and importing logs from Washington and Canada to run through the Branscomb mill for less cost than if he were to succeed in finding a larger supply of available local logs....snipped

It did indeed eventually destroy the lumber industry and jobs. Young entrepreneurs(pot growers) started growing crops in the forest and brought money into the economy. Eventually the populace started looking the other way. It is a huge cash crop.

No, the locals embrace the pot growers. The Northernmost counties of California — Humboldt, Trinity and Mendocino — commonly known as the Emerald Triangle, is where marijuana as a cash crop has replaced the anchor industries of fishing and timber.

They have won the hearts & minds of the locals. It is saving their community with cash, Lots of Cash. Just like in Columbia & Bolivia where farmers made a good living off coco leafs. They are treated as businessmen who saved the area. Personal use of Marijuana is legal in California so they got over their moral objections with really going green.

Local LE has basically given up & it is only State & Feds Drug Enforcement.

ha. should have put a smiley face with that one. I was thinking more of the down-wind neighbors, having a run on the local stores' supply of munchies. Breathe deep. :laughin:
